One of my favorite battles was begun, the Battle of Chickamauga. 2nd to Gettysburg as the bloodiest battle (unless you count the Seven Days as one running battle). Union lost 17,170, Rebels lost 18,454. Other that the two Bull Run battles, the most complete CS victory. But, in the end, meaningless and harmful in the long run. The Rebel Army of Tennessee routed much of the Union Army of the Cumberland and ran it back to Chattanooga, where it was besieged. But Ulysses Grant took over the western theater, went to Chattanooga and drove Braxton Bragg's army away from the city. Therein lies the harm. Grant was almost on the shelf after he took Vicksburg. His army was being taken away, piece by piece. But Chickamauga and the Chattanooga battles redeemed him. In March of the next year, he was given overall command of all US armies and the Confederacy was doomed.
