Here's an interesting article on dinosaur extinction that claims that dinosaurs were dying out before the KT meteor strike from 65 MYA (million years ago). So what happened? My conjecture is that the newly evolved placental mammals were the reason. Yes, those tiny furry devils were able to kill the baby dinosaurs and that ultimately led to fewer and fewer adults. Plenty of dinosaurs survived the meteor strike and we call their descendants birds. Those dinosaurs didn't fare very well on the ground and the others got chased onto trees. The dinos couldn't compete against mammals on the ground. And neither could the Multituberculates. Such is my conjecture.
