Would you like to know more? Still an entertaining sci-fi action film from director Paul Verhoeven and writer Ed Neumeier that is satirical as well as action-packed. For all the blood and gore with the action on the surface, we get a commentary on things like fascism and propaganda. The actors feel like they were cast more for their looks than acting, but their performances are adequate enough. While it falls short of the level of Verhoeven films like "Robocop" and "Total Recall", "Starship Troopers" is still entertaining with more than meets the eye. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Starship Troopers (1997) - 3 out of 4 stars
"A gung-ho WW2 movie transplanted to the future, when high school kids are encouraged to become "citizens" by enlisting in the army and serving the state. Little do they dream that they'll be engaged in a full-scale war against marauding insects. With Verhoeven at the helm, you know this won't be subtle, but it's so sharp, energetic, and (at times) funny that it transcends being a "giant bug" movie. Not for the squeamish, with its graphic dismemberment of humans and insects, but robust entertainment just the same. Based on the novel by Robert A. Heinlein. The incredible creature animation was supervised by Phil Tippett, who directed the 2004 sequel for cable TV. A second sequel was released direct to DVD." 25th anniversary article: gamerant.com/starship-troopers-sci-fi-masterpiece-25-years-later/

how the hell did this movie get greenlit? An ultra violent satirical sci fi action film with no stars and the director coming off of Showgirls. Hell one of the studios behind it was Disney. Studios definitely took more risks back then it seems

I didn't know what I was getting myself into with it. One of my first R rated theatrical viewings. All's I know is 1997 was one weird era of pop culture where we all seemed to flock to whatever was getting buzz, good or bad alike.
