Star Wars is a very 1970's style movie- here are some elements to look for: First, the 70s films embraced realism. As such there are many 70s movies which showed a great deal of junk and trash in city scenes. Look at movies such as The French Connection and see all the trash and litter everywhere. Much of the unique look of the George Lucas version of outer space is due to the junky-ness of it. There's a lot of little things here and there and it fits in very well with the 70s trashy feel. A big break from the suburban clean look of sci-fi up to that time (ex: 60's Star Trek) Second, Star Wars is first and foremost a teen movie and a generation conflict movie. Younger people are battling older people and the older people represent the system or "the man". Darth Vader can easily stand in place for any establishment ruler. The 70's was the time off protests and the anti-war movement. The baby boomers were challenging the old guard everywhere but were still "rebels" w/o a power base yet. Third, Princess Leia is a nod to the growing growing feminist movement and represents the young assertive female. The 1970s was is the time of the campaign for the Equal Rights Amendment. Much is made of her being as capable as men. She is basically a teen queen. Fourth, the Force! The 70's was a time of religious experimentation- cults flourished as did communes. The Force is very in line with a lot of the mystical books published in the 70's which broke from traditional religions and explored metaphysical ideas. You wouldn't have found this in sci-fi of earlier decades. I didn't even get into the 70's hair styles! (a Wookie is just a hippie on steroids)

And judging by what we saw in the holiday special, they had the same home decor like a 70s tv sitcom.
