One of the many actors you have seen, but maybe not know the name of. He found his niche playing arrogant and dapper sophisticates with a pencil-thin moustache and slicked back hair, immaculate suits and sophisticated manner an attitude in many old movies, but played the lead in at least two movies. He had been on Broadway since 1923 and it was producer Samuel Goldwyn who took him to Hollywood to play an Irish patriot in Beloved Enemy 1936. In Hollywood he stayed for another over 200 movies and television roles until 1971.
Jerome Cowan (1897–1972)
This year we celebrate his birth in Norwich Connecticut, USA 125 years ago.
One of the many names that needs a face or a face that needs a name.
Looking confused with Ginger Rogers in Shall We Dance 1936
With Mary Astor in There's Always a Woman 1938
The one with the white hat in Torrid Zone 1940
The tall one in another Cagney vehicle, City for Conquest 1940
Maybe his most famous role today, as Bogey's Detective Bureau partner in The Maltese Falcon 1941.
Warner Bros gave him the lead role in their Find the Blackmailer 1943, it only took 55 minutes.
In Roy Rogers vehicle Silver Spurs 1943
As French Emperor Louis Napoleon III in The Song of Bernadette 1943
Solving a crime with Jane Wyman in Crime By Night 1944, his second lead role.
One of the many men (left) trying to swoon Bette Davis in Mrs Skeffington 1944
He might know something in Deadline at Dawn 1946
He also played Dagwood Bumstead's boss Mr. Radcliffe in several installments of Columbia Pictures' Blondie series between 1947 and 1949, though in an earlier movie he had played another character, Blondie Knows Best 1946.
Not even a District Attorney can beat Kris Kringle in Miracle on 34th Street 1947
With Kirk in Young Man with a Horn 1950
As Hollywood star systems was crumbling the next port was television in New York, and as many other worked their way into television
Between 1953 and 1957 he acted in over 1000 episodes of this early soap from CBS. Valiant Lady
In Twilight Zone episode The Sixteen-Millimeter Shrine 1959
A regular on the short lived The Tab Hunter Show 1960 -1961.
With Michael Gough in horror movie Black Zoo 1963
Sitting on the left in Hope-Ball comedy Critics Choice 1963
With Gale Gordon in a Lucy Show 1966
His last role was in an episode of Alias Smith and Jones 1971.
Thanks for watching!
Opinions of all kinds are as usual very welcome!
