Traditional hymns ARE the real Christian music, especially chants. Yes, the chants and similar church music that has been handed down to us, especially choir and organ music are still magnificent. I was thinking of JS Bach, especially. By the 19th and 20th centuries, mediocrity actually seemed to become an aspiration of Christian composers and was more and more respected by church congregants who had to sing it. Just my observation. Artists like Phil Keaggy and a few others in the 1980s seemed to be trying to rescue the creative element and I do see an improvement happening. |
