It's hard to think of a DVD set for an extended version of a movie that has before or since given fans unprecedented in-depth access to the making of a movie in all of its stages (it even has four feature-length commentary tracks), and also allowed a director to release a praised brand new cut of a movie created to satisfy fan curiosity on deleted footage, and allowed the movie to breathe more without theater time constraints. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Reviews: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) - 3 out of 4 stars
"Sprawling, epic adaptation of the first part of J.R.R. Tolkein's trilogy about Frodo Baggins, the Hobbit chosen to destroy a powerful ring that threatens Middle-earth. Moves in fits and starts, but intelligent and beautifully executed by director/cowriter Jackson, with phenomenal production values and a fine cast, led by McKellen, perfect as the wizard Gandalf. Won Oscars for Makeup, Visual Effects, Cinematography (Andrew Lesnie), and Original Score (Howard Shore). Extended video version runs 208m. Followed by THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS. Super 35." 20 Years Later, the ‘Lord of the Rings’ Extended Editions Remain the DVDs to Rule Them Allwww.yahoo.com/entertainment/20-years-later-lord-rings-220033773.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall
