If the universe is really deterministic, which it seems to be, would that really differ much from this whole thing being just a big movie that some or all of us plugged into from another world? 3D vision, surround sound, physical vibrations, with some smell and tasto-o-vision included for a few bucks more.

No, in reality is would not. This is however getting into that whole the universe does not exist and the like, where we can say ooo there is nothing the universe does not exist, however that does not change the fact that effectively what we see around us presents as real, even if it is not real we still must act like it is. to address your point specifically, this might be a predetermined or fictional world, however for us in it, we still need to make decisions and pretend the whole thing is real. Not to even go into the idea of different levels of reality.
