If you are on the same line as the defender, you are not offside. Now with VAR if your foot or part of your arm is ahead of the defender, you are offside. To me that is still the same line.
I don't know what the alternative would be, but I don't like it!

I like the “sliver of clear daylight” rule for offside. There has to be a gap between the torsos of the players involved. Outstretched arms or legs shouldn’t put players on or off side….

I like the “sliver of clear daylight” rule for offside. There has to be a gap between the torsos of the players involved. Outstretched arms or legs shouldn’t put players on or off side…. Yeah, as a matter of principle taking into account the torsos makes much more sense, although it might be not so easy to make a determination in practice.
