I'm not entirely sure when the idea of the supergroup came about as collaboration within the arts seems to have always been a key to success. Yet at some point, it kind of did.
Who are some of your favourite supergroups?
In Ol' Chicago : Graham Nash pays a visit to Howard Stern ...
Thanks!

The term "supergroup" can be kind of nebulous. Taken as just the merger of members of two or more existing groups, then Led Zeppelin could be a supergroup. Jimmy Page came from the Yardbirds and Plant and Bonham from Band of Joy. Journey would be a supergroup with Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon coming from Santana, Ross Valory from Steve Miller Band and Ansley Dunbar from The Jeff Beck Group. But when you think of supergroups, you rarely thing of LZ of Journey. I always thought the ones with the most potential were Blind Faith, with Clapton, Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker and Ric Grech. And Derek and the Dominos, but it had to be difficult having two of the greatest lead guitarists, Clapton and Duane Allman in the same band. I guess I'd have to say Cream or CSNY. The Traveling Wilbury's also (damn, I don't think there was ever a group with that much talent.
One of the great "what if's" was the possible supergroup of Jimmy Page, John Entwhisle and Keith Moon. Moon and the Ox were ready to leave the Who and join Page's New Yardbirds project. But Entwistle decided he didn't want to break up the Who and neither wanted to be involved with Robert Plant (the genesis of the name Led Zeppelin). If they had got Steve Winwood, oof.

But if they'd lasted, we'd have lost a lot from Zep, The Who, Traffic. I might list Cream #1, but I just consider them a regular band. And CSNY just an iteration of CSN with Neil. Guy has a list here. I assume John & Yoko = Plastic Ono Band rateyourmusic.com/list/ozonebaby/favorite_supergroups/

Going off ozonebaby's list, my first choice would be Rainbow, and my second would be Bad Company. Those are the only two supergroups listed where I own any of their albums.

And what would have become of Plant and Bonham since Band of Joy was kind of a dud.
Rainbow was another thought. Blackmore, Dio, Cozy Powell, Joe Lynn Turner but Rainbow was kind of a revolving door. Like John Maynall's Bluesbreakers
I thought about The Dirty Mac but it was just a one time thing. But serious talent
John Lennon Eric Clapton Keith Richards Mitch Mitchell

Heard the name (and the recommendations) many times. Are they a bona fide indie supergroup?

I guess it depends how strictly you want to use the term. I've heard them referred to as such and according to Wikipedia they're One of their best, from their second album, Electric Version, channeling Bunuel in the video

I get to thinking this about the Breeders, you see. I mean, you've got seasoned members of the Pixies, Throwing Muses, Slint and the Perfect Disaster on board, at what point is that not an indie supergroup?!

Yes, I think you could definitely include them also

Shake up the moon, shake up the moon
Shake up the moon, shake up the moon
There's no other cars on the road
I can see every star in the sky tonight
Barefoot on the accelerator
Barefoot on the accelerator
Divine Horseman, Divine Horseman
Divine Horseman, Divine Horseman
Pull in the reins on your people's appetite
C'est Le Mort, this is a strange doll
Vaudaux breakdown and the hooves crash down
Hooves crash down and leaves are crushed
There's a sick child in my house
I'm giving you her secret name
I'm giving you her secret name
I'm giving you my secret name
I'm giving you my secret name
That's when I found out
What they didn't want me to find out
Their hearts're in the right place
Right in the palm of my hand
Darling, dust off my crown
I'm coming, I'm coming up to heaven
I can hear the dice being tossed
For your bloody dress
But they'll never get near your bed
Never touch a hair on your head
Divine Horseman, Divine Horseman
Divine Horseman, Divine Horseman
Divine Horseman, Divine Horseman
Shake your rattle, ablution is coming
Shake your rattle, ablution is coming
Say amen over a lonely bed
Say amen over a lonely bed
Stranger whistling in the alley
Stranger whistling in the alley
Stranger whistling in the alley
Stranger whistling in the alley
Now there's a horse. now there's a horse
Now there's a horse without a rider
Now there's a horse without a rider
Now there's a horse without a rider
Now there's a horse without a rider
Divine Horseman, Divine Horseman
Divine Horseman, Divine Horseman
Divine Horseman, Divine Horseman
Divine Horseman, Divine Horseman
I know what you are, I still love you
I know what you are, I still love you
I know what you are, I still love you
I know what you are, I know what you are

To play devil's advocate, I guess the counter-argument to a band like the Breeders is it was secondary songwriters coming together to find their own voices. Hence, in their case, Slint lasted one album and Throwing Muses kickstarted a third outfit. It's complicated.

Should have mentioned The Firm. Short lived collaboration between Paul Rodgers and Jimmy Page. The drummer, Chris Slade, went on to play with AC/DC during their Razor's Edge renaissance. Radioactive was their best known tune but I loved this one more.
Bonus points if you recognize the bartender in the video. There would be no Rock and Roll w/o him!
