A man's home is his castle. I ride a mountain bike all over the place for the last two years. All these homes with great yards, porches, patios and decks. Some even with swimming pools. No matter what day it is or how nice the weather is I never see anyone outside their houses. About the only time I see someone outside is if they are mowing. What is the sense of having great yards, porches, patios, decks and swimming pools if you never use them?

My neighbor has an indoor pool. VERY classy. Chairs with matching cushions. Stacks of fluffy color co-ordinated towels. Spare robes for guests to use. Vases of flowers. The whole Hollywood movie studio set up. On the wall is a very classy framed poster that says "I don't swim in your toilet so don't pee in my pool"

You got a pool? Use it! Or else why waste the water? Pee, pee, pee, pee, peeeeeeeeeeee

What is the sense of having great yards, porches, patios, decks and swimming pools if you never use them? Just saw this because it was bumped. I've often thought this, too, and I've also often thought it while biking as well as hiking. In some hiking spots I frequent, you basically get a tour of folks' backyards for part of the trail. I almost never see anyone enjoying them, even though as you say, there are often decks, playsets for kids, pools, etc. I bike a lot in metro New York City (because that's where I live) and there I notice it most often with balconies. I almost never see people on their balconies. If I had a balcony, I'd spend a lot of time on it, and I'd probably even sleep on it sometimes. As it is I've been tempted to go up to our roof and sleep, but there's no easy access to our roof. When I was growing up I enjoyed our porch, patio, swimming pool, back yard etc. a lot

My son is 7.
He doesn't know how to work a smartphone or tablet. He can use a desktop, but that is about it.
We play baseball outside, ride bikes, play hide and seek, jump on the trampoline. I get home about 4:45 - 5:00 pm every day and we stay outside unless we are eating dinner.
It's all about deciding what lifestyle you want. When he was about 12 months old I used to sit on the couch and watch TV and play on my laptop every day after work. One day, he wanted to play outside. He was just learning to walk and he stumbled to the sliding glass door and pointed outside. I said "Let me find something for him to watch on TV."
My wife said, "He doesn't want to watch TV, he wants to play outside." I swear it was like a light bulb went off in my head. I had what alcoholics call a moment of clarity. I took him outside, and we've been playing all sorts of games and having imaginative adventures ever since. It's all about being engaging and creative. It's easier as they get older.

Thank you for sharing this, Mello. You've restored my confidence--and I'm completely serious about this--that there may actually be some hope for the human race after all.

I rode my bike 23 miles today. Passed many houses with all the stuff I said in the OP. In those 23 miles I saw one person in his yard. And the only reason I saw him was because he was mowing. It hit 89 degrees today where I live with sunny sky's. Of the many pools I saw not one was being used. When the weather is nice we are outside a lot. As a matter of fact I am going to have a fire in my fire pit tomorrow night. If it is as nice tomorrow as it was today I will be sitting outside in my yard drinking some beers. Definitely won't be inside all day like most people.

lenlenlen1 I guess the point of my earlier post was that these people had this incredibly classy pool and fab-tastic Hollywood-esque setting for the pool and a completely tacky sign about swimming in toilets and peeing in pools. They DO use their pool, btw.
