Probably my fourth favorite movie from writer/director James Cameron. Still one of the biggest gambles a studio ever made on a movie that paid off. Cameron also made this movie with the drive and ambition to show he had something to prove with a romantic drama onboard the doomed ship. Of course the movie wouldn't be as effective if it weren't for the cast and performances and romantic coupling of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. The second half with the ship sinking is still very well crafted with the visual effects and sets leading the charge as the ship sinks. The record-breaking box-office run was something of an incredible rarity that is unlikely to be repeated. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: Titanic (1997) - 3.5 out of 4 stars"Sweeping romance set against the backdrop of the R.M.S. Titanic's maiden voyage in 1912--and framed by a modern-day story of a salvager who stumbles onto a heretofore unknown survivor of the sinking (beautifully played by 1930s leading lady Stuart). Spectacular in every way, an eye-filling re-creation of the sights and sounds of the grandest ship of its time, but what keeps it afloat are the magnetic performances of the young leads. Storytelling savvy and momentum make up for some banal dialogue. Some footage of the actual Titanic wreckage is sprinkled into the opening sequence. Written by the director. Winner of 11 Oscars including Best Picture, Director, Visual Effects, Music (James Horner), Song ("My Heart Will Go On"), Cinematography (Russell Carpenter), Sound and Costumes (Deborah L. Scott). Cameron revisited the ship's watery grave with his 2003 IMAX documentary GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS. Rereleased in 3-D in 2012. Super 35."

Just rewatched it a week ago. It's a favorite of mine. There are a few cheesy lines and moments here and there, but I find it very engaging throughout and incredibly well directed by Cameron, especially the second half with the ship going down.

Fabulously made movie by Cam the Man.....my youngest daughter is still bonkers about it.
Personally I can never watch it again though.....the first time was under a degree of familial duress. Too realistic depiction about a very upsetting true-life disastrous tragedy.
I am one of those emotional wimps that watches movies to escape from horror and sadness.......there's enough horror in real life for me to want to watch more of it as entertainment.
But all Kudos for the sheer military operation of the massive film-making craft of it all. Great film for me..... until the ice hit.

A Night to Remember is to me the definitive account of the Titantic.

A Night to Remember is to me the definitive account of the Titantic. I agree for the most part... While the Jack & Rose story was well told, I don't need a fictional story woven into a movie concerning the real disaster... There were plenty of interesting people on board, whose stories could have/should have been told instead... and many other Titanic films have featured some of those stories, and those films turned out great, such as "A Night to Remember"... However, to be fair... Many of those films are older and were in Black & White... So it's great to have another film, in color... Also other films were made on board ships which were NOT Olympic Class ship. Neither was this ship, but... The sets were built to represent that class, and so it feels like it was the real thing. They were beautiful and impressive. I loved the Set Tour 'documentary' that was made... Watching it makes one feel like you are really there... It was included with the Three Disc DVD Set... And it's now posted on YouTube: A year before this film, a TV film was also made... Both films show the ship breaking in two. These were the first films to do that, so that definitely bumps this film way up to the towards the top of the list of the best Titanic films... And out of the many Titanic films, that I have seen so far... I don't believe that anyone has depicted the Iceberg Collision moment as well as Cameron did... After all these years, and after many viewings, it's still incredibly suspenseful! The first part of the film, doesn't entertain me much any more, so I will usually just watch the second half. When it comes to that, I would say that is better than what we saw in "A Night to Remember".

It has its flaws in terms of iffy dialog and historical accuracy (in particular regarding its treatment of First Officer William Murdoch), but overall is a filmmaking triumph. Titanic captures the majesty and spectacle of the ship, as well as the tragedy, and why it still resonates with us over a century later. Even when the characters occasionally feel a bit like cutouts, you still feel immersed in the story of that fateful crossing.
For anyone fascinated in the ship itself, I highly recommend the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge, TN. It's unaffiliated with the film, but is an incredible experience if the event itself is of interest to you.

I'm seeing the re-release next month. I missed out on the 2012 re-release and a movie like Titanic deserves to be seen on a large-format screen.

Still love this film for Billy Zane. What a great actor that should have had more starring roles. I like his little cameo towards the end of Holmes and Watson (boarding the Titanic).

Yes this could have easily been another Heaven's Gate of disasterous proportions. But with James Cameron's determination and ego, he churned out what was at that time the biggest box office hit of all time.
And it does score big as a winning romantic drama, as well as just being a magnificent production. But I have to tell you, I eventually got sick and tired of all the hype at the time.
