I've never been a huge Rolling Stones fan, and have never seen them in concert (though have seen some of their concert films/movies, and their music videos), but do like them, and have enjoyed (some of) their music over the years, and get why their fans love them.....but what I DON'T get, is how, and why, they've achieved the INCREDIBLE success they've had for SO many decades now. What, exactly, is it about the Rolling Stones that explains their unparalleled success in rock ?? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Rolling_Stones_concert_toursThe Rolling Stones perform at Cleveland Municipal Stadium on June 14, 1975www.cleveland.com/music/2013/05/rolling_stones_in_cleveland_re.htmlThe Rolling Stones No Filter Tour At Metlife Stadium, August 1st, 2019rocknyc.live/the-rolling-stones-no-filter-tour-at-metlife-august-1st-2019-reviewed.htmlSAVE FERRIS

Well for one they've managed to keep mostly the same lineup for decades, so that helped. I disagree their success has been "unparalleled", the Who, KISS, AC/DC, U2, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Metallica are huge selling acts that have been successful for decades.

I think their swagger helps and bad boy attitude. Also, they play a style of driving, rhthym and blues rock that doesn't seem to go out of fashion.

I disagree their success has been "unparalleled", the Who, KISS, AC/DC, U2, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Metallica are huge selling acts that have been successful for decades. In 2021, they played large stadiums. According to figures from PollStar, the Stones raked in a whopping $115.5 million and were named the most successful live act of 2021. In second place was Harry Styles with $86.7m (£65.4m), followed by The Helle Mega Tour of Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer in third place on $67.3m (£50.8m). All of their tours have been huge. They're a money-making machine. Everything is marketed. Between 1989 and 2002, it was estimated by Fortune magazine that they had accumulated over $1.5 billion in gross revenue.

They sold their souls for rock and roll. It worked for me too!

Huge money machine with ridiculous ticket prices aimed at the rich nostalgia crowd. They don't sell records anymore, haven't really in decades (think the blues one had the best sales) so it's all down to nostalgia. Keef barely plays, bad hand arthritis so largely throws shapes. I lost any last morsal of respect when they didn't immediately quit after Charlie died.

They're the Bad Boys. Plus, the sound they make is pretty good.

They have a cohesive unit. They have talent. They can write good songs. They stayed true to who they are (mostly). Shine a Light is a good example of talent and song writing. Speaking of which, I just happened to see the Shine A Light (2008) documentary this past year for the first time and enjoyed that, but my favorite (so far) has been the documentary filmed in Ireland in 1965, and first shown in '66, though not "officially" released until 2012, Charlie Is My Darling (and won't soon forget the scenes at those shows with almost NO (real) security AT ALL, where fans were repeatedly jumping up, and off the stage (and ON THE BAND!!) almost at will !!). REALLY gives one a first-hand feeling of what it must have been like to be around the band back then, just before things REALLY started taking off for them.... Charlie Is My Darling (2012)SAVE FERRIS

but what I DON'T get, is how, and why, they've achieved the INCREDIBLE success they've had for SO many decades now. What, exactly, is it about the Rolling Stones that explains their unparalleled success in rock ?? In the 60s, they were marketed as the bad boy counterparts to the nice boy image of the Beatles AND, while the Kinks had planted the seed of hard rock with You Really Got Me in 1964, their image did not follow and the fuzz riff of Satisfaction took the world by storm in 1965. The Kinks kept going with catchy, banging riffs but their themes remained nice and based on teenage romance before turning to parody with Sunny Afternoon in 1966. "Girl, I want to be with you, all day and all of the night" was nowhere as edgy as " get off of my cloud", " here comes your 19th nervous breakdown" or " she's under my thumb". The Stones made a point of being confrontational, which kept them out of the smiling poppy field and allowed them to take back the head of the emerging hard rock with Jumpin' Jack Flash as soon as the hippy fad started to wane. That move made them "the greatest rock'n'roll band in the world" as they announced themselves in 1969. Calling yourself the greatest can make it happen when enough people want to believe in it. And there they stayed for years, delivering what it said on the tin, sticking to their riffs and image, keeping it simple and catchy enough. After 1973, the Stones were so established as a standard rock legend they could keep filling any venue they liked no matter what they did.
