Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film. FIRST TIME FILM VIEWING Naked Alibi (1954, Jerry Hopper)blu rayA good film noir which takes place mostly at a border town which is a nice sub-genre, the border-noir. Has a good cast and is well made but the writing is pretty basic. 7/1021 Bridges (2019, Brian Kirk)Solid crime film starring the solid but somewhat overrated Chadwick Boseman. 6-6.5/10Abandoned (1949, Joseph M. Newman) blu raySolid enough but also forgettable film noir. 6/10Elvis (2022, Baz Luhrmann)This is some weak ass writing with thinly written characters. Overstylised with razzle dazzle to make up for the lack of heart. Some of the recreations are astonishing and Austin Butler is great with the material he has to work with. Style over substance… classic Luhrmann. 6/10Deported (1950, Robert Siodmak) blu rayAn American crime romance drama film set in Italy that feels rather laboured and the unlikable lead charctebdoes it no favours. The on location shots are nice though. 5.5/10REPEAT MOVIE VIEWING Die Hard (1988, John McTiernan) 4K UHD discThe holiday action classic, never disappoints. A Star turning performance from Bruce Willis and one of the great villains ever put to film with Hans Gruber. 8.5/10Home Alone (1990, Chris Columbus) 4K UHD discThis holiday comedy is always a treat. A Star turning performance from Macaulay Culkin and a great supporting cast all round. 8/10Django Unchained (2012, Quentin Tarantino) blu rayOut of all his films that I like, this one has gone the longest without a rewatch. It held up really well and in fact many of the things that bothered me years ago were not as bothersome this time around. Sure it’s still a little bloated but it’s a fun ride all the same. 8/10The Running Man (1987, Paul Michael Glaser) 4K UHD discSure it’s cheap, poorly written and Arnie isn’t very good in it but it’s a lot of fun and Richard Dawson makes a great villain. 6.5/10FIRST TIME TV VIEWING The White Lotus (2022, Season Two)A darker season two sees us at another White Lotus hotel, this time in Italy. On par with the quality of the first season. Maybe with better writing for characters but anoitece slower overall. 8/10 Django Unchained (2012, Quentin Tarantino) Haven't seen this since watching this at the cinema. It's not my favourite Tarantino, but entertaining enough.

First Time Viewing
The Basketball Diaries (1995; Scott Kalvert) - A young Leonardo Di Caprio is excellent in this drug drama, but it would've benefited from some better direction and tighter pacing. 5/10
Love Eternal (1943; Jean Delannoy) - This modern re-telling of the Tristan and Isolde fable has some exquisite cinematography and a great dreamlike mood, but is also rather deliberately paced and you have to buy into the fairy-tale-like story. 6.5/10
Seven Blood-Stained Orchids (1972; Umberto Lenzi) - Solid giallo which could almost serve as a blueprint for the genre as it has all the typical tropes you can expect. 6.5/10
Repeat Viewing
The Perfect Host (2010; Nick Tomnay) - Fun indie comedy-thriller with a great turn by David Hyde Pierce. 7.5/10

I remember it being kinda gross but well enough acted, not sure what I’d rate it now but then it was probably a 6/10

Happy New Year (a bit late). My favourite movie of 20222 is Tar (so far, at least). Yours: Naked Alibi 6/10 I like Sterling Hayden and Gloria Grahame, I thought this was so-so though. Elvis 8/10 I liked it a lot. I'm usually not a big fan of Baz Luhrmann's style, it worked for me on this though. Austin Butler was great. I actually liked Tom Hanks too. Die Hard 9/10 Yep. Classic. Home Alone 7/10 I haven't seen it in ages. I remember thinking it was O.K., but a bit overrated. Django Unchained 8.5/10 Loved it. I haven't seen it since it came out, but yeah... The Running Man 8/10 I like it actually. It's really fun. It holds up for me. Also, I like that it actually prediced a lot fo stuff (CGI and deep fake technology too, in a way... ) Mine: Avatar: The Way of the Water 7.5/10 O.K., I enjoyed it. It does feel too long, and it drags a bit, in the first half, IMO. But I thought a lot of parts were really great, moving too. And the final battle is really incredible. I really liked Sigourney Weaver, she plays a teen basically, she really nails it, IMO. The Landlord 9/10 It's a Hal Ashby movie, with Beau Bridges. It's about a rich guy who decides to buy a building in the ghetto, to re-structure it and move there, but he hasn't considered the actual tenants in his plan. Loved it, I thought it was really great, a real blast. It changes a lot, pretty abruptly, near the end, it really worked for me. Loved Diana Sands, she's the actress who plays a tenant who has an affair with Beau Bridges' character. I really liked Lee Grant too, she plays his mother, she's really funny. Point Blank 8.5/10 John Boorman movie, with Lee Marvin and Angie Dickinson. It's about a robber, betrayed and left for dead by his partner, who starts to hunt him down to get revenge and his cut of the heist. Love it, it holds up for me. It's beautiful visually. I like the style, especially at the beginning. Lee Marvin is really good. Nostalgia 8/10 It's an Italian movie, Mario Martone directed it, it's about a man who goes back to his old neighbourhhod in Naples, after he had to leave the country as a teen, because of a crime he was involved in. He tries to re-adapt to it and finds that his old best friend is now the powerful Camorra boss who runs it. It took me a while to get into it, then I did. I liked it. The lead actor, Pierfrancesco Favino, is really good.

Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. Yours Point Blank - yeah great style , I’m a big fan 8/10

Although, yes, it's more than 3 hours long, so I guess it's subjective, it depends on how people relate to that length. It's also absolutely worthy to watch in a theatre, IMO. Actually, I have no idea how it would hold up on a small screen. I guess, it would still be fun, but still... Yeah, I really liked the almost experimental vibe in Point Blank, especially in the beginning.

Hey Billy Happy new year My partner wants to see the new avatar but the length has put us off for now. I’m easy either way. Yours Point Blank - yeah great style , I’m a big fan 8/10 Well, I didn't find Avatar 2 boring though, even in the parts I thought dragged a bit. Yeah the beginning of point blank is always the bit I remember about the film first
