Saw a few rumors about the BIG CAMEOS in Secret Wars, along with about a billion Reddit posts with people FANBOYYING OUT. My reaction was a little different. I see the cameo thing getting old fast so I thought I’d share some thoughts on VARIANTS…
In Dr Strange’s Mom we see VARIANTS of Strange, all still played by Cumberbatch, who commit or have committed dark actions: one tried to kill America, another used the Darkhold to obtain Christine, while yet another used the Darkhold to stop Thanos and ended up destroying a universe. All of this serves the story because it shows us what our prime Strange may be capable of. When he does indeed use the Darkhold Christine remarks “You Stranges are all the same!” This line has weight because of the VARIANTS.
In the same movie we see Captain Carter and WhatsHerName as Captain Marbles. Both are played by actresses we know from the MCU and based on knowledge from past MCU films we can easily surmise how they became these heroes in a “what if?” scenario. Cameos like this are fun and can be introduced organically, but without anyone there to interact with them they feel a bit pointless. Strange doesn’t care about who they are. If say, Sam or Bucky or Carol were there it would have more meaning. In Secret Wars these types of cameos could be great fun, but probably won’t serve the story very much.
Then there’s the LEGACY VARIANTS. The Patrick Stewarts, the HugeAckmans, the TOBEY TOBERMANS. No Way Home is a really fun movie, but at the end of day it’s a gimmick. The fan service is fun, but ultimately kind of flimsy. Past Spidermen do serve the story as they act as mentors to prime Peter. But the thrill is based on the meta knowledge of past franchises and nostalgia. As a huge fan of Stewart’s Xavier I should have been giddy to see him in Dr Strange’s Mom. Instead I was left wondering why we wasted valuable screen time on blatant fan service that doesn’t serve the current story. If HUGEACKMAN is going to shake hands with TOBERMAN in SUPER SECRET WARS it will likely get a gigantic cheer from packed theaters. But will those cheers be earned? Will it serve the story? Will it have the thematic weight of characters we know in this MCU universe paying off actual story arcs? I wonder.

It’s entertaining to see all three Spideys hanging out joking about past villains, ect. But it’s just a fun gimmick and not much more. It’s kinda like watching a very self aware comedy skit.

I’m just wondering if they’ve played their hand too early. We already saw the three Spider-Man and many past villains together in NWH, and we’re getting Hugh Jackman back in the next Deadpool movie. What surprises would that leave for Secret Wars?

Pretty much agree with everything you said. Especially that No Way Home was a gimmick. What a bad movie that was. One of the most uninspired and half-assed big-budget movies ever.

I think there’s a booster out now to protect against MCU variants.
