Incredibly realistic, authentic movie about a British frigate playing cat and mouse with a French 'phantom' in the Pacific during the Napoleonic Wars. Russell Crowe is perfectly cast as Jack Aubrey, as is Paul Bettany as the surgeon. The entire cast is stellar. I only wish they had done better at the box office so we could have gotten more of these. I think one of the best films of the 00s. 10/10

A As close to an A+, yet it does wander on occasion. Would certainly make my top 100.

I saw it in theaters, but was not impressed. I really should watch it again, but don't find it on tele much. A 6 for me.

This movie is a big bore, a collega at work said, and he had watched it just after seeing the first Pirates of the Carabeen movie, and I might agree after seeing these movies in that order it might be boring as hell.
Since I didn't see them at that order I liked it 8/10

Between 6 and 7 for me. Never quite got what was supposed to be great about it, though it's certainly a very watchable movie.

6/10. Its attention to detail and the acting are both top notch but I was bored at some parts.

A true shame more books in the series were not filmed. Though I completely understand - it didn't exactly set the box office on fire + they would seem to be on the pricey side to finance, not to mention the time & energy filming asea on locations.
We can be grateful that cg hasn't been used for more of them on the cheap.

8/10 – a great look at a British warship in the Napoleonic era, including seamanship, gunnery, apprenticeship, deception. and even carpentry.

Between 6 and 7 for me. Never quite got what was supposed to be great about it, though it's certainly a very watchable movie. I think critics gave it a lot of love because it was an old fashioned swashbuckler like Horatio Hornblower or Captain Blood that wasn't CGI heavy and was more reliant on character interaction and the setting than action scenes themselves. Come of think of it, it might have been the very last movie like that.
