Easy: All the Leone Westerns. At least the four crappy ones that the bubble boys of IMDB love so much. Horrible misuse of inspired music that makes the movies look even dumber than they are. THE GRADUATE. You can tell that Simon and Garfunkel had no idea how stupid the script was going to be. Next to Leone, the biggest misuse of great music ever. THE BREAKFAST CLUB. Just like the first two, a misuse of great music. A story where one or two people just use an entire movie to turn classmates into stereotypes. This is the perfect example of how not to write a good script, and how not to make a good movie. Too bad they used good music. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY: Not as bad as the other examples, but still a misuse of good music for a poor Hollywood formula movie. ^ Never actually seen 2001: A Space Odyssey π 100 Best sci-fi movies ever made30 Best sci-fi movies of all timeBest sci-fi movies of all time rankedAFI top ten sci-fi Popular Mechanics 100 Best sci-if movies of all timeEsquire 100 Best sci-fi movies of all time Top 25 sci-fi movies of all timeI have yet to find a list that does not rank 2001, as the BEST (or second best) science fiction film of all time. And part of the reason is Stanley Kubrick's unorthodox style and very in-formulatic approach and atypical Hollywood style of filmmaking. So, while I appreciate your opinion (in the sense that you decided to offer it), I don't think it's one that many people would agree with. In fact, it strongly suggests that either you don't actually know what a Hollywood formula movie is, or you've never watched 2001. Congratulations to Captain Bryce for displaying supreme ignorance and pawning himself for the "retard of the century" nomination.
Those with IQs over 25 will know what I mean, because Bryce actually posted this. Bryce actually admitted with all the endorsements by special interests that it was a Hollywood formula movie.
You can't have it both ways. You can't say you're not formula and then say you are accepted by the powers that need formula.
Well, maybe Bryce never saw the pile of crap, but I did. It wasn't all bad at 3/10, but it was Hollywood formula, as Bryce himself just proved. But then, dorks need to go with the popular opinion, which is why Bryce is a dork. No offense.

No, "Bryce" did no such thing. That is what you tried to do with your straw man argument because the actual point I made has most likely gone completely over your head. You can't have it both ways. You can't say you're not formula and then say you are accepted by the powers that need formula. Good thing I never actually said that then huh! I doubt you've ever actually sat down and watched this movie (you've probably only seen still shots or select scenes from it and don't even really know what it's about. The movie was revolutionary in terms of storytelling and in how it was made, and to this date there hasn't been a sci-fi film that has told a similar story in the same way. You don't even seem to understand what formulaic filmmaking refers to (hint: It has absolutely nothing to do with how many accolades it receives). quote source="/post/490434/thread" timestamp="1496602905" author=" drystyx "]But then, dorks need to go with the popular opinion, which is why Bryce is a dork. No offense. Ad hominem isn't "offensive" when it is revealed to be the act of desperation it so obviously is. On the contrary, it's pits full! The fact is, not only do you not know what you're talking about, but you are also a very insecure person as to require validation from others that your opinion is "correct". You can't even justify your point of view by talking to me directly, which suggests that you can't actually defend it at all. Monkeymen learn tools/weapons from big black monolith. Shuttle takes 30 minutes to dock. Talking. Another 30 minute trip, this time to Moon. Talking. Trip to uncovered artefact that tries to deafen people. Spaceship headed for destination of radio signal. Boring computer goes insane, kills a few people. Captain turns it off, discovers what mission is. Captain suffers bad acid trip for 40 minutes. The end. Strange formula, but damn those Hollywood types!

The point is that "Hollywood formula" is what is accepted by the very entities you name, because they are establishment, and the problem with liars like yourself is that you claim that what is "establishment" is "anti-establishment", that what is "formula" is "not formula", which is why only liars, idiots, and lunatics alone can possibly agree with you. There is no other choice.
Oh, did mean Styx make you cry home to your mommy again and make the other whiny brats come to your aid? Me sorry.

Actually, I destroyed YOUR point, pawned YOU (in two different ways btw), and proved that you don't know what Hollywood formula actually is. Your best bet would have been to try to make the argument that films such as 2001 established formulas that Hollywood would eventually come to accept as an expectation, but you can't even do that because you're so bad at this (debating) and so one dimensional in terms of your knowledge base on the topic. Even IF there was some validity to your argument with respect to what constitutes "establishment", it still fails on the basis that these so called entities are singling out films that are notably unique and revolutionary in terms of the Hollywood norms. And unless you can make an argument that suggests otherwise (which we both know at this point that you can't), then you've just made yourself look very dumb. There is certainly nothing to be afraid of when it comes to dealing with you on this particular topic. And if I was you, I'd quit while I'm behind, cause you're never going to get ahead - especially with these childish insults supplanting whatever argument you think you're making. You basically just said that anyone who disagrees with you is a liar, idiot, or lunatic. That's your entire argument in a nutshell. You really sound like a goddamn idiot right now (but it's amusing so please keep it up)

Don't know if you're just a moron or a liar who can't face the truth, but all you can do is change the subject to try to hide, but you still whine like a baby.
And if you were a man, you would do something about it. But then...that's what you would do...if you were a man.

Dude, 2001 wasn't exactly a critical darling upon release. It was only later it came to be welcomed as a classic, and it was through reissues and some stoners, it finally became a big hit. Leone's spaghetti westerns were not that well liked by initial critics either. π I'm not understanding your reasons for hating on em. If you just don't like them, fair enough. I never liked The Howling, I much preferred An American Werewolf in London, but even that was slightly shitty. But, my opinion, I'm not going to patronize people who like something I hate. π

So, you can cite all the spam you want, all the little bits and pieces that you think will make the naΓ―ve feeble minded believe you, but they're the only ones. I don't hate 2001, but it is a poor movie. It makes no sense, unless you have a synopsis to tell the story, because it is poorly directed and poorly written. Unless you know what is going on, you have to be told, unless you're psychic. It's a mess.
It is what it is. So next time you trolls want to start insulting people, totally unprovoked, and yes, you trolls did start it. Look back at the posts, liar, so don't even go there. It got too hot for you when I came up with reality and facts, and you want to troll. Well, it's there in black and white. You just proved the point I always made about those critically acclaimed Hollywood formulas being for control freaks, cause you sickos keep proving it. I did not start this. You and your mob did. If you don't like being pushed back into reality, you shouldn't have come up with your lynch mob and insults.
About 3 or 4 of you so far against one of me, again illustrating my point.
Any way, thanks for showing up another lie of your mob, trying to stay I started this argument. You just pawned yourself, idiot. Thank you.

What is formulaic about it?
And check the box office charts. It only became biggest hit of its' year through reissues. At the time it got a very mixed reception from critics, as have a number of the guy's movies - A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Barry Lyndon, Full Metal Jacket.
Formulaic by Kubrick standards maybe - cold and aloof. People rendered inert by surroundings. Big white sterile rooms. As far as sci-fi goes, this was pretty groundbreaking stuff. The biggest problem is that too many sci-fi movies came out trying to be oh so ponderous and serious, and it took a throwback to 30s serials to make sci-fi fun again. Hell, even a monster bursting out of a guy's chest, and growing up to crunch faces made it more fun.
Perhaps if you want to follow it better, you could try the book by Arthur C Clarke, or the original short story it was modified from, The Sentinel.
How about 2010? That one's more straightforward, somewhat less enigmatic. Still weird though. That one was made by Peter Hyams, who made Alien-meets-High Noon Sean Connery flick Outland, fake Mars landing thriller Capricorn One, Arnie vs Satan movie End of Days, big monster in museum flick The Relic, among many others.

Xanadu Flash Gordon (1980) These are two out of the four movies that come to my mind when I think about "Crap movies with music by good rock bands". The others are: Dune (1984; music by Toto) Zabriskie Point (1970, music by Pink Floyd) A disclaimer however: I've never seen Xanadu, so I don't know how crappy it is.
