It's an animated film, and the creatures don't even look good. Overused, overblown and mediocre CGI.
Its success is absurd and surreal.

It edged out The Lion King remake, so that's good at least?

There’s a decent bit of practical elements. At least, there’s more than I expected when reading up on how it was made.

Walt Disney wasn't holding his breath underwater for 6 minutes at a time.

Is its performance due to international sales? It’s anecdotal for sure but I only know of one friend that has gone to see it compared to Maverick. I’m sure it’s due to the circle of friends I have and our interests but I just don’t see the massive buzz surrounding it translating to ticket sales here locally.

Ive no idea how this has made almost 2 billion. Theres no hype or buzz that I can see for a film thats going to make that much. Compared to something like Endgame or Top Gun Maverick which really had strong online/cultural presence.

How Avatar is doing so well shouldn't be a mystery to folks here- given you can look up the numbers easily online. Its doing very well in China and France in particular, as well as the US. Avatar is not culturally linked to any race and translates well in the world market. I know it seems amazing- but there are other countries and peoples in this world than just the US.
And if Avatar is just a successful cartoon then all those MCU movies are just glorified versions of Blue Clues with mostly cartoon characters. Superhero fans can hardly look down on anything given their own movies are targeted to people at a mental age of 12.

"Cartoon" has a specific definition and Avatar is not that.

Are you saying all adults who watch superhero movies have the mental age of 12? You're an idiot.

It’s success is no more surreal than the success of the first movie. The real test will be Avatar 3, since that’s coming out a mere two years after the second one. I think the second one actually benefitted from coming out so long after the original.

I'd say it looks like a video game even more. Actually I'm probably wrong.
Because it looks like a video game. But the film is more like a cartoon.
