Anyone familiar with it? I am a big fan of Japanese cinema and I knew about it, so when I saw the movies for sale some time ago for a not unreasonable price, it wasn’t hard to convince myself that I should buy the entire series. Recently I finally got around to watching the first movie, “Battles without Honor and Humanity”, from 1973.
I must say that I really didn’t like it very much. Yakuza guys talking, talking, talking about who has done what and who is betraying whom, then going out and killing one another. Rinse and repeat. Way too many characters to keep track of, and none of them developed to any decent degree.
I’ve seen reviews calling it “the Japanese Godfather”, but IMHO that’s absurd. The Godfather had a plot, not just things that happen. Plus characters that were distinctive and well developed.
Am I missing something? I was looking forward to watching the entire series (eight movies in total), but now I am not sure I will have the patience for it.

I've been aware of them for for some time and while I also enjoy Japanese cinema, they've never been a major priority.
