When did you see an Irving Rapper movie lately?
He was a Londoner who went to Hollywood, and later a Cannes nominee.
Considered as the last of the Hollywood directors when he passed away at age 101 in 1999.
This year we celebrate his birth in London 1998.
Irving Rapper (1898-1999)
A programmer 1941
One Foot in Heaven 1941, starring Fredric March on the lighter side
The Gay Sisters 1942 (gay meant something else back then)., starring the great Barbara Stanwyck.
Now Voyager 1942, moving up to the big league with a Bette Davis vehicle, and Paul Henreid lightening two cigarettes.
The Adventures of Mark Twain 1944. a so called biopic of the great writer staring Fredric March,
Oscar nominated for technical details and music.
The Corn is Green 1946
Bette Davis again! Here playing a teacher who sees a talent. Based on a play by Emlyn Williams that Ethel Barrymore made a success on Broadway
John Dall and Joan Loring were Oscar nominated.
Rhapsody in Blue 1945. a biopic with Robert Alda as George Gershwin.
While it had more or less nothing with the real George Gershwin it was a big hit, mainly thanks to the music.
Deception 1946, Bette Davis and Paul Henried meets again. Claude Rains come in the way. Ticket payers loved it.
.
The Voice of the Turtle 1947 based on a lighthearted play by John van Druten.
This was actually a Christmas Release by Warner Bros once, and apparently forgettable.
Anna Lucasta 1949
Maybe one of the last straws of Paulette Goddard disappearing stardom.
Not highly regarded.
Made independently and distributed by Columbia Pictures.
The Glass Managerie 1950 based on a Tennessee Williams play.
A prestige movie from Warner Bros, with a stalwart cast, including Gertrude Lawrence who was soon gonna hit big on Broadway.
Another Man's Poison 1951
With Bette Davis as a mystery writer entangled in a web of mysteries, not unlike her own novels. Made in England.
Forever Female 1953
Highly regarded fluff by some critics about an actress who can't tolerate the she is too old for a role.
Bad for Each Others 1953.
Early soap about a veteran doctor from Korea war, returning to home town in Pennsylvania and what to do for the rest of his life.
Strange Intruder 1956
Strange soap about a Korean war soldier who made a promise to another dying soldier to kill his kids if his wife marries another man.
A critic wrote that not even Ida Lupino could save this mess.
The Brave One 1956 that won an Oscar for best Screenplay for Robert Rich (cover for blacklisted Dalton Trumbo). The directors own favorite of the movies he made.
Marjorie Morningstar 1958 back in the big budgets.
While a big hit, fans of the book wasn't too happy with the casting.
The Miracle 1959
A love story from the Napoleonic era between a British soldier and a young postulant.
Constantine and the Cross aka Costantino il grande 1961
Only if you have to watch every Cornel Wilde movie!
Joseph and His Brethren aka Giuseppe venduto dai fratelli 1961.
Not sure what this is or if it was even finished.
Pontius Pilate aka Ponzio Pilato 1962
European spectacle staring Jean Marais, Jeanne Crain and Basil Rathbone. Slightly above a usual peplum.
The Christine Jörgenson Story 1970.
Based on a famous sex change operation. Lambasted by critics.
Born Again 1978 with religious undertones of some involved in Watergate scandal and especially Charles Colson. Interesting cast though.
A very uneven director to say the least!

Thanks for watching!
Opinions of all kind are welcome!
