Hello again! Sorry I haven't been online much. I've spent a decent portion of the time since Christmas in the Hospital and while I've been home a bit and watching movies, getting online hasn't really entered into my to do list. Still nice to be back! Sorry to say none of yours this week. Mine: Halloween Ends (David Gordon Green, 2022) Oh boy. I get why a lot of people absolutely hate this one. I don't personally hate it though, and in fact I like a lot of the ideas it was trying... I just don't particularly think it was well executed and found myself still not caring for it much. Performances were fine, I think this is a case where Green just didn't properly tie it up do to wanting to experiment. 5/10 Dragons Forever (Sammo Kam-Bo Hung and Corey Yuen, 1988) Yay! A Jackie Chan movie I've never seen before... and it's a good one! Chan plays a lawyer, which is a bit different, but there's a lot of good comedy here and some amazing martial arts scenes. 8/10 Terrifier 2 (Damien Leone, 2022) Overlong and with some extreme kills that just seem cruel for cruelties sake. That said, I found myself liking it. Art the clown gets some nice physical comedy while still being creepy (particularly in the costume shop scene). I'd rewatch it. 7/10 Bleeding Steel (Leo Zhang, 2017) Yay! Another Jackie Chan movie I hadn't seen before... oh, wait... this one is terrible. Bad CGI, ridiculous costumes and plot, and the martial arts scenes aren't that great either. 3/10 Hope you are feeling better! Halloween ends- yeah agreed 5/10 or less

Sorry to hear you were in the hospital, hope that means you're doing better now though. Only seen Halloween Ends from yours. I didn't flat out hate it, but I didn't like the directions they went with it very much at all. 4.5/10 I'm doing much better now. I somehow managed to get covid, the flu and bronchitis at the same time. So I was pretty miserable for a bit there. Just now feeling like I have energy to do things other than sit and breathe.

Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film. FIRST TIME FILM VIEWING The Banker (2020, George Nolfi) TVBased on true events, set in the 1960's is this tale of two black men trying to get business done in a white mans world. It is well paced with good performances and a great jazzy score. The story beats and structure are pretty familiar but never uninteresting. 7/10 Buffalo '66 (1998, Vincent Gallo)
Low budget quirky film with a surprisingly unlikable lead character that people seem to like. Some interesting stuff here. 6/10 Hurlyburly (1998, Anthony Drazan)
This film is based on a play and often feels like it. It is a very talky piece with a mixed bag of success despite the A list casts efforts. Still I stayed interested throughout. 5.5/10 REPEAT FILM VIEWING Consenting Adults (1992, Alan J. Pakula) Disney+
This thriller starts with a slow burn to set up motivations that mostly pay off later. It is well enough made and acted and a solid timepasser. 6/10 Bringing Out the Dead (1999, Martin Scorsese) Disney+
I had not seen this Nicolas Cage led Scorsese film since the cinema. In the cinema I was underwhelmed and on rewatch it was even worse. This feels like a poor mans Scorsese film and just made me want to watch a better Scorsese film like Taxi Driver. It has a few good individual scenes, some humerous moments and picks up a bit once Cage ends up working with Tom Sizemore. In the end the story doesn't really go far and feels just like a bunch of scenes. I felt nothing at its conclusion. 4.5/10 WEEKLY FILM AWARDSBEST FILM: The Banker BEST ACTOR: Kevin Kline - Consenting Adults BEST ACTRESS: Christina Ricci - Buffalo '66 BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Samuel L. Jackson - The Banker BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Anna Paquin - Hurlyburly BEST EDITING: Curtiss CLayton - Buffalo '66 BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Charlotte Bruus Christensen - The Banker BEST SCORE: H. Scott Salinas - The Banker BEST SCRIPT: Niceole R. Levy - The Banker BEST DIRECTOR: George Nolfi - The Banker 10/10 - Perfection (or as close to it as possible) 09/10 - An Excellent film 08/10 - A VERY Good film 07/10 - A Good film 06/10 - A Solid film 05/10 - An Average film 04/10 - Below Average film 03/10 - A mostly bad film 02/10 - A mostly terrible film 01/10 - Awful through and through 00/10 - Not only awful but offensive Hi, Dark. Here I am. Yours: Buffalo '66 7/10 I remember thinking it was O.K., I saw it ages ago though. Hurlyburly 5/10 I remember not liking it much. The acting is great, but I thought the movie was a bit heavy-handed. Consenting Adults 6/10 Saw it ages ago. I remember thinking it was so-so. Bringing Out the Dead 8/10 I liked it actually. I think it's underrated. Mine: Babylon 8/10 It's Damien Chazelle new movie, with Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt, it's about a producer's assistant, a girl who wants to be a big star and an actual big movie star in Hollywood in the 20s, just about the time when the silent movie era begins to end and the sound changes everything. I liked it, it's quite an experience. It does feel too long, but it's really insane, it's a blast and then at a certain point it becomes very dark and surreal. It's not for everybody, but yeah, I liked it. It stuck with me. Loved the ending too. Margot Robbie is great. Brad Pitt is really good too. I think Leo would have also been perfect for his role. Blow-Up 8.5/10 It's Michelangelo Antonioni movie, wiht David Hemmings and Vanessa Redgrave. It's about a photographer in London who becomes convinced he photographed a murder as he was taking pictures in the park. But it's experimental, it's not really a thriller. Love it, anyway, loved the atmosphere and the general vibe. And I loved the ending, althhough that would really be quite divisive. David Hemmings was good. Shoot the Piano Player 9/10 It's Francois Truffaut movie, with Charles aznavour, about a a former classical pianistk, who now plays in clubs. He receives a visit from his brother, who's chased by two gangsters, and he gets in trouble, together with a waitress in the club. It's really great, loved it, it's more a melo than a crime movie, it's very sweet, human and sensual, and then the ending is wow, I really didn't see it coming. Charles Aznavour was really good, and I loved the actress who played the waitress, Marie Dubois. Fright Night 2 (1988) 5/10 It's the sequel to the original, with Roddy McDowall, about the lead characters of the first movie who now have to fight an actress who's also a vampire. I didn't like much, I prefer the first one. It's kind of dull, IMO, although the gore and the make up effects are nice.

Hey Billy babylon - I’ll see it eventually blow-up - I used to really like it but on my last view of it, it dropped quite a bit. Still has its moments though 7/10 fright night 2 - pretty sure I saw all of this as a kid but wasn’t a fan, I don’t really like the first one either

First Time Viewing
Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991; Rachel Talalay) - The worst film in the series. 3/10
Sole Survivor (1984; Thom Eberhardt) - Low-key but atmospheric horror-thriller which is said to have inspired Final Destination. 6/10
Zeder (1984; Pupi Avati) - Unusual Italian zombie movie which didn't work as well for me as the director's previous horror classic The House With Laughing Windows. 6/10
TV
Freddy's Nightmares - TV spin-off series which barely features Freddy and is overall more of an annoying small town comedy than a horror show. 4/10
Repeat Viewing
Ad Astra (2019; James Gray) - Visually stunning but sort of distant and overly serious space drama which kind of lost me in the second half. 5.5/10
New Nightmare (1994; Wes Craven) - A great concept, Freddy enters the real world, is almost undone by a silly finale. 6.5/10
Hey Raven, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991; Rachel Talalay) 4/10 Ad Astra (2019; James Gray) 7/10 New Nightmare (1994; Wes Craven) 7/10

Still has its moments though 7/10 fright night 2 - pretty sure I saw all of this as a kid but wasn’t a fan, I don’t really like the first one either Cool. I guess one has to be in the right mood for Blow-Up, but I definitely love it. Have you seen the Fright Night remake? I didn't care much for it. You should check out Shoot the Piano Player, I think you'd like it.

None of yours this week, but I'm looking forward to Babylon. Also, Blow-Up I've been meaning to watch for a few years now, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Babylon is divisive for sure, but if I'm beginning to understand your tastes, you might find it interesting, at least. I love Blow Up. I like its mood and the vibe. I like Whiplash, La La Land, and First Man a lot, so I figure there's a good chance I'll enjoy Babylon.
