As simple as that.
Almost all women in the first two movies went possessed by the Kandarian Demon, turning into vicious Deadites. All of them are slaughtered by the male hero. Only two women didn't go possessed: Bobby Joe and Annie Knowby. They died.
There's no Final Girl, but a "Final Man": Ash.
There are no black characters. No Asian characters. No Arab characters. Just a Sumerian book.
Please, call DISNEY or Kevin Feige, we must boycott these misogynist, racist movies forever!

Yes. It was written by Kevin Feige.

Neither have I, but even with not having seen them I can bet that 'woke' was not the first thing the creators had on their minds.

Neither have I, but even with not having seen them I can bet that 'woke' was not the first thing the creators had on their minds. The very first Evil Dead - '81 is terrific. It was inventive and original when first released and any humor wasn't really intentional at the time. The females were represented as genuine lovely characters and in horror, it is easier to project fear onto their gender. Both males, one was heroic, the other a bit of a wimp, were well defined for what decent males represented in the era. The remake Evil Dead - '13 takes an even more intense approach, with the main character being a female junkie going cold turkey and it plays on her neurosis beautifully. Don't care for Evil Dead 2 or Army Of Darkness. I did like the Ash vs Evil Dead tv series though. That did go for deliberate horror comedy, like the film sequels and leaves no stone unturned. I should look these up. I've always liked Bruce Campbell (I just recently watched Bubba Ho-Tep again, for something like the umpteenth and fifth time), and don't really know why I bypassed these, or at least the first one. Never caught the tv series either. Your post makes me think I've got some remedial viewing to do here.

Somewhat off topic, but it always struck me as odd in the Hammer Horror films, that when Christopher Lee met a pretty girl with splendid knockers, the best he could come up with was to drink her blood
