The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said today that it won’t take any action to revoke Andrea Riseborough’s Oscar nomination for To Leslie. “The Academy has determined the activity in question does not rise to the level that the film’s nomination should be rescinded,” AMPAS CEO Bill Kramer said in a statement (read it below).

I mean while the Academy does have a long history of racism and misogyny, I don't believe there was a conspiracy to undermine anybody for her at all.

I'm less bothered by Riseborough's nomination than by the possibility that a certain actress's remark that "Harvey Weinstein is God" may have something to do with her slew of Oscar nominations.

“It’s been confusing,” Riseborough told THR in her first statements about the controversy. “And it’s wonderful the film’s getting seen. I suppose it’s a really bright ray of light. When any of us engage in anything, we want for that piece of work to be absorbed in some way. You can’t control how people absorb it.” As for measures that need to be taken, she observed, “Awards campaigning is as acerbically exclusive as it has always been. I do not yet know which measures will best encourage meritocracy. I’ve been working toward discovering them and will continue to.”

It is politics in the Academy. Not the first time nor will be the last time they have faced something like this.

Maybe I am naive but the acting branch of the Academy might just get weary of nominating those who are expected to be nominated. They might see a campaign, see the movie and just say "this does deserve a nomination".
It won't be as much fun if we have to nominate by numbers instead of merit.

They might see a campaign, see the movie and just say "this does deserve a nomination". It won't be as much fun if we have to nominate by numbers instead of merit. Give it a couple more years and they'll just expand the nominee lists for acting to include 8 to 10 people.
