So years ago in history class we watched a World War movie I believe the 1st one. I can't recall any of the actors in it. Some details I remember is at the start a soldier is branded a coward for whatever reason. He returns to the war when a young fellow enlists so he can protect him I believe. There is also a scene where the hero brutally kills a defenceless enemy by stabbing him in the head, I think it's at the start of the film but can't be sure.

Well the being branded a coward part sounds like The Four Feathers which had four film adaptions (1921, 1929, 1939, 2002) plus a television adaptation (1978).
However, the war was in the Sudan.
Additional: The Mahdist War, 1881–1899.

The brutal stabbing scene reminds me of "Cry of Battle" from 1963. Probably not it, but I thought I'd suggest it just in case.
Any details you can remember might be helpful. Knowing if it's World War 1 or World War 2 would narrow it down.

When did you see this movie ... that would help establish a "not made after this date" date for the picture.
