The Grapes of Wrath The Ox-Bow Incident Advise & Consent Fail-Safe The Tin Star On Golden Pond Mister Roberts Madigan Gideon's Trumpet Midway Great choices, movielover. I'm a big fan of most of those, and it's nice to see your mention of GIDEON'S TRUMPET -- a very good film, that one. Which reminds me of another that I really love, another TV movie called SUMMER SOLSTICE (1981), a lovely film in which he co-starred for the only time with Myrna Loy. Worth a look, if you haven't seen it.

To the usual suspects like The Grapes of Wrath and 12 Angry Men, I'll add:
A Big Hand for the Little Lady
There Was A Crooked Man

I generally do not like westerns, but I liked:
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) dir: Sergio Leone (my favourite Leone).
There was a Crooked Man (1970) dir: Joseph L. Mankiewicz (a potentially great western mangled by the studio. Lee Grant's sizeable role was slashed to 3 or 4 lines. That alone should be a hanging offence, but there was plenty of other malign interference).
Maybe I like them because Fonda played a baddie in both. His frequent posing as the gold-standard of American quiet integrity often gets up my nose, though 12 Angry Men (1957) dir: Sidney Lumet is a great film.

You Only Live Once 1937 Jezebel 1938 The Grapes of Wrath 1940 The Lady Eve 1941 The Ox-Bow Incident 1943 12 Angry Men 1957 The Tin Star 1957 Fail Safe 1964 A Big Hand for the Little Lady 1966 Madigan 1968 There Was a Crooked Man... 1970 On Golden Pond 1981
For some reason or other My Darling Clementine never yelled with me. Yours, Mine and Ours 1968 might not be great, but I liked the teaming of Fonda and Ball.

I'll second SUMMER SOLSTICE Bless you, tim! I haven't seen this one in ages and really look forward to seeing it again. It's hard to believe it's the only time Fonda and Loy ever performed together. Thanks for finding it.

Young Mr Lincoln - always surprised this film doesn’t get more notice. Fonda is a great Lincoln, with his flat Midwestern accent, his drawling slow speech. He radiates carefully hidden intelligence and humor, and great kindness. It’s a great cast.
Mr Roberts.
Grapes of Wrath - it’s as much Gregg Toland’s beautiful photography, the light of Fonda’s face and the great script. Fonda did what he does best, as James Cagney said , he learned his lines ,hit his mark, looked him in the eye and told the truth.

Believe it or not, Marsha, I have not seen YOUNG MR. LINCOLN. Don't know how I missed it all these years. But I think it's coming up on TCM sometime soon, so I'll be sure to watch it then. Thanks for your excellent commentary.

The Grapes of Wrath 12 Angry Men The Ox-Bow Incident Recently learned that Fonda produced 12 ANGRY MEN. Kudos to him for that.
