Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Viola Davis Star in First Trailer for Nike Drama AIRwww.yahoo.com/entertainment/ben-affleck-matt-damon-viola-153217293.html"Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have re-teamed for a sports drama. The pair star in the first trailer for AIR, which is based on a true story and marks Affleck's first time directing since 2016's Live By Night. It's the first film from Affleck and Damon's new production company Artists Equity. In it, Affleck, 50, plays Philip Knight, the co-founder of Nike, Inc., and Damon, 52, stars as Sonny Vaccaro, the sports marketing exec who helped sign Michael Jordan to Nike and launch Air Jordan sneakers. Viola Davis is Jordan's mom Deloris in the film, and Davis's real-life husband Julius Tennon plays the NBA star's dad James. Air also stars Jason Bateman, Chris Messina, Marlon Wayans, Chris Tucker and Gustaf Skarsgård. "AIR reveals the unbelievable game-changing partnership between a then-rookie Michael Jordan and Nike's fledgling basketball division which revolutionized the world of sports and contemporary culture with the Air Jordan brand," an official synopsis reads. "This moving story follows the career-defining gamble of an unconventional team with everything on the line, the uncompromising vision of a mother who knows the worth of her son's immense talent, and the basketball phenom who would become the greatest of all time."

The Hollywood Reporter sat down for a profile on Affleck ahead of the release of Air. While discussing the film, he revealed that nobody will be portraying Jordan onscreen. He said that the sports icon "exists above and around the story" rather than being a character directly shown onscreen.

Giving me a Moneyball vibe... my heart says see it theatrically, my brain says more engrossed at home on smaller screen.

Despite good performances and a few instances of witty humor, AIR is a by-the-numbers sport business drama with an uninspired soundtrack, because the songs are the most obvious choices for a 1980s setting you could think of. Some of them don’t even match their respective scenes! Everything builds up to a meeting at Nike with Michael Jordan and his parents (Deloris & James). In fact, the scene was presented with all the techniques reserved for the climax of a plot... but no, the climax happens later. A lot later, actually, which made the movie feel longer. I don’t mind most of the changes to the true story. Hey, it’s a dramatization after all. However, I draw the line at turning David Falk (M.J.’s agent) into a sort-of antagonist. Not to mention that he’s portrayed as someone abrasive and Rob Strasser (Nike’s Marketing VP) is portrayed as someone level-headed, when it should be the other way around.
5/10
