I’m watching Young Bess and thinking about Jean Simmons and Stewart Granger. They came together when she was on the way up, and he, though he did not know it, was about finishe. After their marriage they both signed with MGM, and got some good films. But Granger was bored with swashbucklers and James Mason or Richard Burton got the meatier roles. Simmons was in bigger films with upcoming stars. To put the cap of it , his best friend was Michael Wilding, perhaps the ultimate actor husband to an up coming super star, Elizabeth Taylor. By the time Granger and Simmons divorced, ironically, their careers were both headed down into smaller films and TV.
my question is this. Hollywood couples, it seems like sharing the same job would be great. In reality even slight disparities in clout, or a sudden dry spell can wreck the marriage. What Hollywood / theater / TV couple can you think of that fell into this hole? Any that survived?
Further , cases where the insistance of one partner on having the other partner in the film , did they help or hurt?

Franchot Tone didnt enjoy being Mr Joan Crawford IRL nor losing her onscreen to Gable or Robert Taylor. Susan Shaw and Bonar Colleano (UK example) - He was killed in a car crash and she became an alcoholic, her funeral paid for by Rank. I believe Liz took the role in THE COMEDIANS to prevent Burton working with Sophia Loren...

I believe Liz took the role in THE COMEDIANS to prevent Burton working with Sophia Loren... Liz was no dope! She was on location for Anne of the Thousand Days and Night of the Iguana. She correctly read teenagers and gallant boozy stars as dangerous. I don’t think the acting had anything to do with the two crashes of the Burton marriages. Not sure if Liz could sustain a marriage for 20 or more years but she really didn’t get the chance. Alcohol and money took them down.

Two of the obvious one Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher and Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh
Both golden couples Edie was definitely jealous when Debbie’s recording of Tammy was a hit. His recording career was stalled and his pictures were pretty blah.
Tony was more of a star than Janet. When they split her career got a lot better with serious performances like Psycho and Touch of Evil. Tony could have gon on if booze and drugs had not taken over.
The real problem was that both men were seriously damaged .

They were not married but I believe Walter Chiari, then being Ava Gardner's squeeze, was cast at her behest in THE LITTLE HUT/ Don't think he hurt it too much but in truth its a small target....

Bogie and Bacall thrived but who's to say if they would have lasted the long haul. I like to think they would.

I'm guessing they broke up by 1974, because Sophia Loren and Burton were in Vittorio De Sica's last movie, "The Voyage"

For your consideration, the divergent cases of two performers married to stars with outsized egos. One that didn't survive: Broadway performer Ruby Keeler married Al Jolson not long after his screen popularity exploded with The Jazz Singer. Starting in films herself after coming west, she soon found her star in ascendence while his was on the wane, and they divorced in 1940. During their marriage, Keeler once said, "Al Jolson is the greatest living entertainer in the world. He tells me so every day." One that did: Stringer Davis and Margaret Rutherford worked both separately and together for decades. In an interview, Davis once said, "When we're working, she's the star and I'm a supporting player, so I'm perfectly happy to be her supporting player at home as well."
