Ha, I thought of him when I saw the thread title

Just wanted to add that the actor who played this role had terminal cancer when they hired him and died, I think, even before the movie was finished shooting.  He used his appearance to intensify the final role of his acting career.

And, to lowtack86; I never saw any photos of Fred Phelps, but I imagine that this is what he looked like.  I had the misfortune to run into his group of protesters at a public showing of the AIDS quilt.  Family members and loved ones had to cross a picket line of his howling parishioners to see their loved one's quilt piece.  There were crisis counselors there to help the people traumatized by the event.  Yet one more reason I am an atheist.
