I saw a screenshot of a tweet where Gunn admits that his Superman project was in the works a couple of months before the announcement was made that he'd be the new co-CEO of DC Studios and would be making a Cavill-less Supes movie. Many are pointing out that this would mean WB knew they were going in a "different direction" with Superman before they had Cavill announce his return. My guess is that they were hedging their bets and kept Cavill in the dark until the deal to make Gunn co-lead of DC Studios was in place. If that deal bad gone sideways for whatever reason, they would've continued with Cavill and nobody would've been the wiser.

If this is true, it would have been a dick move from DC considering that they allowed Cavill to come back as Superman in Black Adam.

If James Gunn was hired six months ago, that would place the timeline in August. That’s reportedly around the same time that The Rock started trying to push for Henry Cavill to come back. I assume that WBD basically approached Gunn as a contingency, in case Black Adam flopped. If Black Adam had been a success, I think they would’ve moved forward with Henry Cavill, and instead of making James Gunn the head of DC Studios, Seven Bucks Productions would’ve more or less been the ones calling the shots.

Gun has made it apparent from day 1 he's not interested in about 99% of the DCEU actors. I can't completely fault him for that given the quality of those movies, but to just drop a guy DC was actively telling was a part of the plans is shitty.
Such a bizarre decision to start fresh while the previous universe hasn't finished yet.
