I don't remember if I've seen Fallen Angels.
"In the Mood for Love" is so perfect I have not dared watching it a second time. "Chungking Express" is pretty damn good too.

Fallen Angels is right up there. ITMFL is my favourite too. Fallen Angels is really terrific as well. Dark, neon-schemed, violent, and with all the camera techniques that make you feel sucked into the movie. The same script in a different director's hands wouldn't cut it.
I highly recommend it. I watched it two nights ago for the first time and it's a very sensory but also cerebral experience, imo.

Long been one of my favorite directors. Timeless themes of love, loss, and memory, a gorgeous visual aesthetic, and a dreamlike way of structuring narrative. One of a kind.
In The Mood For Love is probably my favorite, but as I said in another thread recently, it's very difficult to rank them.

He once called Fallen Angels the dark underbelly of Chunking Express, its lit as well as such, although both frequent pretty much the same universe. I''ve always found it very intriguing how those two are like time capsules, before that area of China became more restrictive, reductive, and conformed.

It makes both feel like a nice double feature. Yeah, not sure how he would have integrated it as a single film. Fallen Angels definitely has a darker, more nocturnal feel.

Fallen Angels definitely has a darker, more nocturnal feel. If I had to guess, that was done to distinguish it from Chunking Express. There are a few references in there. Agreed with the darker nocturnal feel. Much more of Chunking Express happens during the day, or at least in well lit places. It has a very blue steely sort of colour scheme to it. Fallen Angels is more black with touches of purple, orange and green. I think.
The first time I watched Chunking Express I'd hoped to see more of how the first story turned out. I was as interested in the exploits of that dangerous lady as I was the cop. It's probably the best movie I've ever seen that has a "what-if" hanging over it in terms of direction/story. It seemed more complete upon second viewing when I knew to expect the stories would switch part-way.

One of my favourite contemporary filmmakers, although there are a couple of his films that I strongly disliked... Fallen Angels is top five of the '90s for me, and Takeshi Kaneshiro's Ho Chi-mo is one of my all-time favourite movie characters. It's a crime that Christopher Doyle has never been Oscar-nominated for his work on Wong's films - they are sublimely beautiful like few other films. Ex-smokers like me should approach with caution - his films really do make constant puffing look cool. Ranking what I've seen: - Fallen Angels
- Days of Being Wild
- Happy Together
- Chungking Express
- 2046
- In the Mood for Love
- As Tears Go By
- The Grandmaster
- My Blueberry Nights

In the Mood is my favourite, but Happy Together isn't far behind. That broke my heart.
