My grandfather, dedicated C/W fan loved Chopin. When he came over, he would insist the record would go on. But always with the same demand, "Why don't you play that "Choppin". He knew it was Chopin, my hoidy-toidy sister would always correct him. But it was always "Choppin" or "Fred Choppin".

Chopin Maurizio Pollini - Etudes I like Pollini's Chopin. All of it. Actually, I like everything Pollini's recorded (yes, I heard it all - I think). Except the Etudes, by anyone, even Cortot. Maybe Pogorelich could have made them sound fun when he was not wearing a funny hat. Or Sokolov. Do I have Chopin's Etudes by Sokolov? Did he play them? I need to check. [update: yes, he did. And of course I have them somewhere. But only op. 25. Maybe he agrees with me…] Anyway, these are some of the most boring so-called "great" music I know. Don't see why people like them.

I have tons of Pollini, love it all also. I have some Pogorelich also, I like him doing Scarlotti and the Hayden sonatas. Whether it's Richter or Rubenstein or Pollini I love all the Chopin. Including the Etudes.

Yes, Sokolov makes the stuff worthwhile. Not just the usual mechanical display of technique.

Including the Etudes. Pogo's Haydn was… something. Maybe I'll play that again and see if it's still as hard to get through as I felt it was then. Did Richter play Chopin's Etudes? All of them? I don't recall having that. Let's see… yes, I can only find a few selected ones on various CD's. There's plenty on YouTube too. No complete set. Richter only played what he liked.

Maybe I'll play that again and see if it's still as hard to get through as I felt it was then. Doing this now and I must say I quite like it. The choppy playing in the first movement makes me want to hear this on a harpsichord. I have some by Christine Schornsheim, but only the earlier stuff. She plays Hob. 46 on a piano-forte. I'll check it out anyway. The Adagio is the interesting thing, taken very, very slow and detailed. It feels like listening to Celibidache. Pogorelich is always interesting. Not for casual listening while typing posts on the Internet
