For those interested, Volker Ullrich has a great biography on Hitler. It was split into two books. So does Ian Kershaw. Like Ullrich, it's split into two parts. Very readable. Forst one I read was John Toland's. Also good. Toland disproved two great Hitler myths
1. Hitler was furious when Jesse Owens won the Gold Medal in the Long Jump at the 1936 Olympics. The common view is of Hitler having a shitfit when the black man won medals and shattered the myth of Aryan superiority. Hitler didn't shake Owens hand after he won and he had been congratulating every medal winner. But Hitler missed one the day before and the IOC told Hitler to either shake every winners hand or none. Hitler took option #2 and it was coincidence that Owens was next. Jesse said that he had seen Hitler later and he had smiled at him and saluted. he shitfit myth came from Albert Speer, who told a lot of lies in Inside the Third Reich.
2. Hitler gleefully watched the film of the execution of the July 20th Bomb plotters over and over. The hanging of the principal plotter was filmed. And it was very gruesome. They were hung from meat hooks, supposedly with piano wire but probably with thin cords (piano wire would behead someone). It took them a long, long time to slowly strangle to death. The common view had Hitler watching the film over and over, eating popcorn. The film was found after the war but it had never been run through a projector. The prosecutors at Nuremberg watched it, decided it was too awful to use as evidence and destroyed it.
Hitler had more than enough black marks to hate him. No need to invent more
