One of the most original and interesting directors working today Definitely prefer the slow-mo art installation aesthetic of his recent work to the grittier earlier films 9 2009: Valhalla Rising2013: Only God Forgives2016: The Neon Demon2023: Copenhagen Cowboy (limited series) 2019: Too Old to Die Young (limited series) 8 2011: Drive2003: Fear X2023: Touch of Crude (short film) 6 2008: Bronson2005: Pusher 32004: Pusher II1996: PusherNS 1999: Bleeder

Haven’t seen much of his earlier work
Bronson - 3.5/5 Valhalla Rising - 3.5/5 Drive - 4.5/5 Only God Forgives 3.5/5 The Neon Demon 3/5
I really like most of what I’ve seen but, unfortunately, it seems like - correct me if I’m wrong - he’s fallen out of favor with the film industry. It’s been quite a while since The Neon Demon. After seeing Drive I had really high hopes for the guy, but it just hasn’t panned out. Some people just can’t deal with the slow, precise artsy thing with lingering shots, but I can dig that atmosphere. I prefer it to a lot of what mass audiences consume today. Always has arresting use of color. He definitely does better when someone else has written the script though. I think he needs something solid to work off of to build his aesthetic. Without the purpose of a strong narrative, he’s a little too untethered it seems to me. Would like to see his profile rise again, but I’m not sure that’s gonna happen….or his he even cares.

Couldn't finish "The Neon Demon".
I don't think I have seen any of the others.
*** Edit***
Actually I got the titles mixed up. It was "Only God Forgives" that I couldn't finish. I haven't seen "The Neon Demon".

Since The Neon Demon he's done two limited series (one for Amazon, one for Netflix), and has a new film upcoming ( The Avenging Silence). The two series continue the more opaque/abstract narratives he explored with Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon. Drive which he didn't write is certainly a lot more traditional narratively. Personally I prefer the more experimental direction his work has taken post- Drive, but I can how it would be frustrating to a lot of people.

Drive is great and easily his best work. I was surprised that his usual pretentiousness and self-indulgence was nowhere to be found. The movie was actually entertaining.
I don't care for the rest of his work.

I've only seen three of his movies.
Drive and Bronson were both 8's. Only God Forgives was around a 2.

While I personally really like his later work, I can see how the direction he's taking would be off-putting to some. His earlier films like the Pusher trilogy are a lot more straightforward, sort of low-budget sub-Tarantino gengster type films. Very unpolished.

Only God Forgives was around a 2. Yes, it seems to be his most divisive film

I haven't seen "The Neon Demon". They're both a bit opaque. Drive is his most popular and accessible. Sort of a colder, more stylised Tarantino without all the pop-culture references

Ah Copenhagen Cowboy. I totally forgot to watch the rest of that. I enjoyed the first episode. It goes to some strange places, definitely worthwhile. Love the lead character.
