Hi, Dark. Yours: I only watched the beginning of The Last Run. I'm interested in checking out the whole thing. The Believers 6/10 I remember thinking it was so-so, but I watched it ages ago. Yours: Dead for a Dollar 8/10 It's Walter Hill's new movie, with Christoph Waltz and Willem DaFoe, it's a Western, it's about a bounty hunter who gets hired by a rich businessman to free his wife, who, according to him, has been kidnapped for ransom and brought to Mexico by a black soldier who deserted. He figures out soon though that she ran away of her own accord and they're actually lovers, and has to decide what to do. I like it, it's a good movie, IMO. I mean, it's pretty low budget and it shows, I really liked the classic/spaghetti western vibe though. Also, the acting is really good, especially Christoph Waltz. He plays the bounty hunter, he really nails it, IMO. Beauty and the Beast (2014) 7/10 It's the version with Lea Seydoux and Vincent Cassel. It's O.K., it's not great or anything, too much CGI, IMO, but some of it is not bad, it's creative. Plus, I like Lea Seydoux. Starting Over 8/10 It's an Alan J. Pakula movie, with Burt Reynolds, Jill Clayburgh and Candice Bergen, about a man who gets dumped by his wife because she wants to focus on her music career, and he relocates to Boston, with the help of his brother. He meets a teacher there, they fall in love, but his ex wife gets back into his life. I liked it, it's really well acted, both Burt Reynolds and Jill Clayburgh are good, plus there's Charles Durning in it, Wallace Shawn... The Con is On 3/10 It's a movie with Uma Thruman and Tim Roth, about a couple of con artists from London who go to L.A. to escape a crime boss who wants them dead and there they try to get their hands on a precious ring owned by the wife of a famous director. O.K., I didn't like it, it's really crap, I mean, it tries to be Tarantin-esque, but yeah, it's really lame. None of yours this week. You should checkout Starting Over, if you can, I think you'll like it. Dead for a Dollar is divisive, I guess. I liked it though.

Well, I liked it, but yeah, the low budget feel remains. The Con is On has another title too, I think, The Brits are Coming. Anyway, you don't miss much by not hearing about it. O.K.., somehow there's no trailer for Starting Over on Youtube, only a fan-made one but... Yeah... oh yeah I’ve not seen it but I remember that film being around on tv etc Yeah, I think it used to be popular. Jill Clayburgh and Candice Bergen were nominated for an Oscar for it.

Yeah, I think it used to be popular. Jill Clayburgh and Candice Bergen were nominated for an Oscar for it. Popular enough to have a fan made trailer no less Yes, although now not enough to have an official one on Youtube. It's weird. It's an underground popularity, I guess.

None of yours this week:
Mine:
First time view:
Rumble Fish (Francis Ford Coppola, 1983)
Coppola has called this an "Art house film for teenagers" and I see what he means. Aspects are surreal at times and it's a movie that is all about emotion rather than the plot. There's some good performances here and some wonderful camera work, but it's not one of my favorites from the director. 7/10
Rewatch:
Lost Highway (David Lynch, 1997)
This seems to be the point where Lynch decided that he no longer needed a classic narrative at all and that you could figure things out on your own. Honestly I think it works here, though there are aspects that are more than a touch frustrating. Solid though. 8/10
Friday the 13th ( Sean S. Cunningham, 1980)
Entertaining. It's not great by any means, but it was never trying to be. It was trying to recapture the popularity of Halloween but without the plot/characters... and it's entertaining for what it is. You'll likely see a few of these come up as I've never seen all of series and was just gifted the boxset. 6/10

The Believers - 3/10 Death Wish '18 - 5/10 Mine: The Whale (2022) - 8/10
Brendan Fraser gives one hell of a great performance as a extremely obese man who tries to connect with his daughter. The prosthetics and acting are top notch. Probably not a film I would watch again but still a pretty powerful and emotional watch. Hellraiser (1987) - 9/10
Great gothic, freaky and gory horror film by Clive Barker. Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (1988) - 8/10
Even gorier (I watched the unrated cut) and just as freaky Hellraiser sequel. Some really cool ideas here. Only real flaw is that its a little slow in some parts. Hellraiser (2022) - 1/10
It seems a good amount of people liked this remake. I am not one of them. This was a unscary and extremely boring mess. There was nothing in this film I liked. One of the worst remakes ever. The Final Rose (2022) - 4/10
A slasher film that is a direct parody to the awful TV show The Bachelor. Watchable but way too tame for a slasher flick. Plus there are plot points that never get a full conclusion. Don't Worry Darling (2022) - 3/10
Slow mystery thriller only gets interesting at the end. Chocolat (2000) - 4/10OK but nothing great. Hellraiser (1987) - 9/10
I love the first film. It has flaws, but it's one of my favorite horror films.
Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (1988) - 8/10
Enjoyable. Don't like it quite as much as the first, but I really feel this was the last sequel that really got the first film.
Hellraiser (2022) - 5/10
Better than the other sequels I've seen, but not much of a fan.

Death Wish - Yeah, it definitely could have been worse. 6/10 The Book of Boba Fett - Has its moments, but was just okay overall. 6/10 First Time Viewings: Dark City (1998, Alex Proyas) - 7.5/10The Thirteenth Floor (1999, Josef Rusnak) - 7/10Honor Among Lovers (1931, Dorothy Azner) - 7/10Flags of Our Fathers (2006, Clint Eastwood) - 7.5/10Letters from Iwo Jima (2006, Clint Eastwood) - 8/10Deadfall (1993, Christopher Coppola) - 6.5/10Das Boot (1981, Wolfgang Peterson) - 8/10Troy (2004, Wolfgang Peterson) - 7.5/10Talk Radio (1988, Oliver Stone) - 7.5/10Repeat Viewings: Shutter Island (2010, Martin Scorsese) - 9.5/10I, Robot (2004, Alex Proyas) - 7.5/10On the Waterfront (1954, Elia Kazan) - 9.5/10A Streetcar Named Desire (1951, Elia Kazan) - 9/10Zodiac (2007, David Fincher) - 9/10The Illusionist (2006, Neil Burger) - 7.5/10Movie Awards: BEST FILM: Shutter IslandBEST ACTOR: Marlon Brando - On the WaterfrontBEST ACTRESS: Vivien Leigh - A Streetcar Named DesireBEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Rod Steiger - On the WaterfrontBEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Eva Marie Saint - On the WaterfrontBEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Jost Vacano - Das BootBEST SCORE: Leonard Bernstein - On the WaterfrontBEST SCRIPT: Laeta Kalogridis - Shutter IslandBEST DIRECTOR: Martin Scorsese - Shutter IslandDark City (1998, Alex Proyas) - 8/10
I like this one. The opening scene is unnecessary, but I hear the director's cut removed it, which may make it flow better.
Flags of Our Fathers (2006, Clint Eastwood) - 4/10
Saw it when it first came out. I remember not caring for it much.
Troy (2004, Wolfgang Peterson) - 4/10
Same as last movie.
Shutter Island (2010, Martin Scorsese) -8/10
Not his best, but a wonderful, very different film.
Zodiac (2007, David Fincher) - 9/10
My favorite from Fincher.

Hey sog Rumble fish - it’s gorgeous , I like Mickey Rourke but just like the outsiders I find the dialogue to be written pretty stiff 7/10 Lost Highway - probably my favourite of the Lynch surreal films, Robert Blake is menacing 6/10 Friday the 13th - a lot of fun 7/10

I watched the Director's Cut of Dark City, because I saw a bunch of people saying the theatrical opens with some narration that spoils stuff. Zodiac is my third favorite Fincher, after Se7en and Fight Club.

Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film. FIRST TIME FILM VIEWINGThe Last Run (1971, Richard Fleischer) YoutubeThis feels like an American doing a Jean Pierre Melville crime film. George C. Scott stars as a former getaway driver from Chicago who has retired to a peaceful life in a Portuguese fishing village. He is asked to pull off one last job, to drive a dangerous crook and his girlfriend to France. This has great atmosphere, great driving sequences and sharp dialogue. Good film. 7/10The Believers (1987, John Schlesinger)I have seen parts of this before including the ending but I realised while watching just how much I hadn’t seen. This crime horror film is a bit of a slow burn and it’s focus is meandering until the third act. The acting is solid but what really stands out is the visual direction which is superb. 6/10Death Wish (2018, Eli Roth)Probably the directors best film and a much better remake than expected. However there are many differences from the original and it only compares in the most cursory of ways. 6/10Rustler’s Rhapsody (1985, Hugh Wilson)This western spoof has something compelling about it. It’s a real critique of the western formula and the first 25 minutes is really great. Then it meanders and becomes a bit of a chore before it picks up a little at the end. Definitely an odd bird of a film, worth checking out. 5.5/10The Jet Benny Show (1986, Roger Evans) YoutubeSpeaking of odd films, her is a real odd one. This is a shoestring budget sci-fi film shoot on super 8 film that sees the lead character as an impersonation of talk show entertainer Jack Benny in a Star Wars spoof. Some of the effects are pretty ingenious and the acting is actually really good all around. The film as whole though is pretty bad. 4/10REPEAT FILM VIEWINGNone this week. FIRST TIME TV VIEWINGThe Last of Us (2023, Season One)Based on a video game but with more depth than that sounds, this puts a new spin on the zombie genre. Good TVREPEAT TV VIEWINGThe Book of Boba Fett (2021, Season One) Disney+The character can’t really carry a show, better as a side character. The last 3 episodes are good though as they shift focus to The Mandalorian. Solid TVWEEKLY FILM AWARDSBEST FILM: The Last Run BEST ACTOR: George C. Scott - The Last Run BEST ACTRESS: Polly Macintyre - The Jet Benny Show BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Harris Yukon - The Believers BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Coleen Dewhurst - The Last Run BEST EDITING: Russell Lloyd - The Last Run BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Sven Nyquist - The Last Run BEST SCORE: Jerry Goldsmith - The Last Run BEST SCRIPT: Alan Sharp - The Last Run BEST DIRECTOR: Richard Fleischer - The Last Run 10/10 - Perfection (or as close to it as possible) 09/10 - An Excellent film 08/10 - A VERY Good film 07/10 - A Good film 06/10 - A Solid film 05/10 - An Average film 04/10 - Below Average film 03/10 - A mostly bad film 02/10 - A mostly terrible film 01/10 - Awful through and through 00/10 - Not only awful but offensive Death Wish - 7/10

Holy Spider (Dir. Ali Abassi) via Movie Theatre - Zahra Mir-Ebrahimi, Mehdi Bajestani, Arash Ashtiani - 10/10
Fantastic film, reminds me of a modern day (based in Iran), Taxi Driver, except this actually happened. Can't say enough about how much i was thoroughly engaged. Great cinematography, and score to go with a script which not only does the story justice, but so much of what is experienced through viewing of this film applies to the current revolution in Iran.
Fireworks Wednesday (Dir. Asghar Farhadi) via Tubi - Hedieh Tehrani, Hamid Farrokhnezhad, Taraneh Alidoosti, Sarah Dolatshahi, Houman Seyedi - 8/10 REPEAT viewing
Farhadi's film explores some potent themes of fundamental tradition and chauveunistic society in Iran with great performances, a solid script and suitable direction.
The Outside Story (Dir. Casimir Nozkowski) via Hulu - Brian Tyree Henry, Sonequa Martin-Green, Sunita Mani - 8/10
The Brian Tyree Henry show, great performance by him, a solid script and overall an indie that does a lot more for me than I expected it to.
White Noise (Dir. Noah Baumbach) via Netflix - Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Don Cheadle - 7/10
Enjoyed it more than perhaps those who didn't like it but overall probably one of my least favorite Baumbach films (hes one of my favorites).
The Banshees of Inisherin (Dir. Martin Mcdonagh) via HBO Max - Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon - 9/10
Enjoyed the latest from McDonagh, well paced, with fantastic Gleeson and Farrell.
Offside (Dir. Jafar Panahi) via Amazon Prime - 10/10 -
one of the only Panahi films which I hadn't seen yet, despite having heard how impactful it was. He tackles the subject of Iran's religous law and restrictions on women attending soccer matches. Film has a great balance of comedy despite overall serious tone and subject matter. One of the best Iranian films i've ever seen.
You People (Dir. Kenya Barris) via Netflix- Jonah Hill, Lauren London, Eddie Murphy - 5/10 -
Despite some great moments, overall a lacking script and i had problems believing a lot of the scenarios. Although i understood what they were trying to convey, fell flat at times or just seemed forced.
Knives Out: Glass Onion (Dir. Rian Johnson ) via Netflix - Edward Norton, Daniel Craig, Kate Hudson, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn - 8/10
TV:
Fleishmann is in Trouble via Hulu - Episodes 1-4. Loving this, great writing.
