So many versions of the story .... all welcome to the thread ! Viewed this one for the first time ... struck by how much like a silent movie it is in sets and acting style but, perhaps that impression was enhanced by the sub-titles.
Beauty and the Beast : 1946 (IMDb) A favorite sequence:

I recall a US television offering, in the mid seventies, that starred George C. Scott, and his wife Trish Van Dervere, in the title roles. I did see it, but apart from the basic story, nothing about that production stands out.
I've never seen the Disney animated version in the theater. However, prior to the release, I was in New York City for a broadcasting convention. Disney held a session that covered some of the animation efforts that went into the production. I especially recall the physics that went into creating a realistic flow of the skirt of Belle's ball gown. They said that they worked on that for weeks.

I remain grateful to you for introducing me to that^ version, Catman. And this is the 2014 French adaptation of the story starring Léa Seydoux, which I've watched a few times since I bought it on Blu-ray. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beauty_and_the_Beast_(2014_film)However, my favourite live-action version of the story will probably remain the 1980's TV series starring Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman (this was the first role I ever saw him in, and I'll forever associate him with Vincent. Perlman's one of those actors who can give such great performances whilst wearing heavy prosthetics/makeup).

Rewatched the 1946 Jean Cocteau version recently along with a few of his other films. A masterpiece of dreamlike atmosphere and visual poetry.

My favourites are Jean Cocteau and Juraj Herz's interpretations, from the 1940s and 1970s respectively, which have been mentioned.
And two loose interpretations that amplify the horror, Walerian Borowczyk's 'The Beast' (1975) and Charles Band's 'Meridian : Kiss Of The Beast' (1990).

petrolino the write up and comments on You Tube about Walerian Borowczyk's 'The Beast' (1975) sound a bit "iffy" and now that I looked Meridian up as well ... "loose interpretation" indeed !

'The Beast' was originally conceived to be part of a fantasy story quintet by experimental Polish filmmaker Walerian Borowczyk and French writer / poet Andre Pieyre De Mandiargues. The main project 'Immoral Tales' (1974) instead became a story quartet, with 'The Beast' being expanded to become a feature.

by "iffy" I was referring to the descriptions on YouTube of it as a "grindhouse film" and a song from it as being "unsafe for at work".

I know. It's definitely a film that would have been rated '18' only pre-internet here in England. Not sure how much these enforced certifications (by the British Board of Film Classification) that I grew up with would mean to society today, what with the internet seemingly having changed everything.
