The House at the End of Time(2013) Interesting and well acted Venezuelan haunted house film that bounces back and forth from 1981 to 2011. In Spanish with English subs. 6½/10.

Kadokawa Mystery & Horror Tales vol. 1 (2002) Low budget J-horror anthology straight to video/dvd distribution. Three short stories 30-40 mins each that are not tied together in any way, not that it matters, wraparound stories are hardly ever interesting. The first one, Tomoyuki Akashi's "Meinichi" is nearly worthless, the most generic Japanese ghost story imaginable badly made, and involves a ghost kid, a cursed cat and one strange death. Akashi returns to direct "Cruel Kidnapping", a darkly comic tale about a family man who's baby is kidnapped. Unable to raise the required sum, he then comes up with a very unwise plan to become a kidnapper himself, despite being a total amateur at crime. This would have been a good 15 minute short, but at over 30 minutes the joke wears thin. Kenji Nakanishi directs the last episode "Desire to Kill" about a teenager who breaks into woman's apartment and confesses having just killed his foster mother. What sounds like an exploitation movie premise is here treated as a tragic, even touching psychological mini drama-thriller. By far the best episode, this one also has good cinematography and acting, Akashi's episodes suffering from both cheap digital look and amateurish actors. Not a great collection overall, but the last episode made me curious about the other two volumes.

HOUSE OF EXORCISM -1975 - Having seen Lisa and the Devil first, it was jarring to see this slap and dash edited version when I first saw it--all the more shocking that they found such a good lookalike for Elke Sommer. But then I came across an audio commentary she did for the film--and it really was her throwing up, shaking and cursing, biting priests on the leg. It's such a polar opposite in sensibility to the original version.

Evil Dead II (1987) I'm a rare horror fan who didn't appreciate Evil Dead, so I passed on this one til now. For those who haven't seen it, it's a horror comedy that's absurd in an entertaining comedic way with lots of blood and gore. A nice 7.7 rating on IMDB but I gave it a 4/10.

DREAM NO EVIL - 1970- Strange story that isn't really a horror film and not really much else. Girl from an orphanage seeks to find her father after living with a traveling faith healer family where she dives off a high platform into an airbag as part of the act. She finds her father through a funeral home embalmer who also runs a brothel for elderly men in a hotel. But he is dead--until she puts her hand on him and he resurrects. It gets weirder from there, with a voiceover leftover from the 1950s to add an antiquated melodramatic touch. The cast has familiar faces like Edmund O'Brien, Michael Pataki, and Marc Lawrence. It doesn't add up to much--not quite enough to make cult film status although it was recently released in Blu-Ray.

Werewolf: The Beast Among Us (2012) In the 1800s a European village hires a crew of mercenaries to rid their town of a particularly troublesome werewolf. Solid Werewolf movie. It even has a gypsy recite the "Even a Man Who is Pure in Heart..." werewolf poem. 7/10.

DIE SCREAMING MARIANNE - 1971 --Should have known from my previous experiences with Pete Walker that this would suck.

Pyro... The Thing Without a Face (1964) A successful married architect begins an affair with an arsonist. Things go very badly when he tries to break it off. More thriller than horror. 5½/10.

The College Girl Murders (1967) a horror/thriller where the killer masterminds a needlessly complicated plan to achieve his objective. 5/10.

COLOR ME BLOOD RED - 1965 - "Hey man, dig this crazy game of charades!"
Mad artist needs a special tint of red. 4 groovy teenagers stumble upon his lair. One of them even utters the term "Scooby doo." Entertaining trash is how I have seen it described which seems right.

THE NYLON NOOSE - 1963 - Some kind of krimi though not sure if it is an Edgar Wallace story. Rather generic but watchable.
DR. SATAN - 1966 - anything but generic. A criminal doctor who funnels counterfeit money for a mafia has a sideline of turning people into zombies with his special drug--but as we learn he gets this power from King Devil. Yes the one with the bat wings and horns. Interpol agents are after him but is is the servant of Satan just too clever for them? Mexican films of the 60s often feel like they were made in the 1940s--but it actually makes them more noirish and atmospheric.

The Vourdalak (2023) A lost traveler in a medieval forest is granted shelter by a family in an isolated home, but it turns out the family is besieged by a Vampire like creature. Not exactly my style of vampire movie and the foppish traveler was kind of annoying, but the story was interesting with a good finish. In French with English subs. 6/10.

That's ironic about the Vourdalak because the second movie is about the exact same subject and plot!
THE HORROR OF PARTY BEACH - 1964 - I had seen this before and forgot much of it except the monster(s). Looking at it again, what stands out is that it is hardly a beach party movie and the two leads--who seem around 30, are in no way professional actors and appear to be dubbed. Not smart. If you are going to end up dubbing them--why not use people who are photogenic-charismatic? Unless they are related to the people who funded it.
THE NIGHT OF THE DEVILS - 1972 --Another repeat. Very creepy atmosphere generated in this story of a guy whose car breaks down in a remote forest where a creepy family is worried about what comes out in the dark.

Screaming Dead(2003) In honor of Misty(Erin Brown) Mundae's Birthday yesterday I decided to check one of her low budget horrors I hadn't seen yet. A seedy photographer takes 3 models, his secretary, and a rep of the house he's renting to a supposedly haunted house for an "arty" multi day photo session. It lacks Misty's signature soft core lesbian scenes but it does have lots of eye candy and a particularly nasty ghost. 4/10.

Sisters of Death (1977) - "During an all-girl secret society college initiation, one of the new members is killed. Seven years later, the survivors are invited to a college reunion at a lavish estate, which turns out to be owned by the crazed father of the girl who died."
Silly but somewhat interesting thriller-horror shot in 1972 but released five years later. Why this was shelved I have no idea, it's no worse than a lot of similar low budget stuff. There isn't much going on and the plot is quite illogical, but I enjoyed the 70s cinematography and that special ominous 'waiting' mood that low budget horrors from this decade often have. The hacienda used as the main location, with it's dusty windows and patterned wallpapers, looked like the perfect place to shoot one of those occult shockers so typical of the era. 5/10
