YOKAI MONSTERS: SPOOK WARFARE - 1968 - A Babylonian vampire is released from a tomb and travels to feudal Japan where he kills and takes over the bodies of a samurai and his servant, desecrating the Buddha and local ghosts. One of the latter, a water imp that looks like Donald Duck crossed with the creature from the black lagoon, tries to repel the invader but loses, so he gets other spooks to help. They are weird-looking bunch. One resembles an umbrella with a big tongue and has a human leg instead of a handle, another looks like a rat with a giant round gut that doubles as a crystal ball. There's also a woman with a long snake-like neck who momentarily surprises the vampire when he tries to bite her on the neck. It is described as being like a Hammer Dracula film crossed with HR Pufnstuff. Definitely something to watch if you want to see something that you have not seen before.
QUEENS OF EVIL - 1970 - Hippie encounters three seductive women in an isolated country house where things get more and more sinister and he gets to know them better. Big on atmosphere, low on plot--there's not much surprise to it but interesting visuals here and there.

Immaculate (2024) Sydney Sweeney is an American nun who joins a convent in Italy and finds it has some dangerous secrets. I didn't find Sweeney a convincing nun but the story kept me interested. 6/10.

SALEM'S LOT - 1979 --I notice there is a scene shuffling issue since BoomBoom Bonnie knows that Cully will be sent to Portland by Straker a day before Straker even tells Crockett that he needs two men. That's a bit weird unless BoomBoom Bonnie was on friendlier terms with Straker than any of us assumed. Anyway--it is still one great vampire story. I don't see any problem with David Soul--he gets nervous as it goes--and some of the little things--like where he asks Marie Windsor for a cross is done with a kind of edgy hesitation which gradually increases until they get to the Marsten house. Also, I have heard criticism of Ben dropping the holy water--but I think the point was that he was so hesitant and spooked-Mark is less nervous than him---and then when he drops it--he just says #$%^# this and gets over the fear he has. Mike Reyerson's head jerks as he gets up from the rocking chair are pretty creepy little performance gestures and also Marjorie Glick's obnoxiously exaggerated lashing out with her arms. I always assumed she was killed by the crucifix but she was in the root cellar too.
But James Mason is endlessly fascinating with his superior condescending tone.
Straker: "That will hold you until tonight."
Mark: "What will happen tonight?"
Straker: "...Yes."

Exorcism (1975) A young woman who has been dabbling in drugs and a devil worshiping cult begins to have violent personalty changes. Paul Naschy does a good job as a friend of the family priest who is called in to help her, even though he doesn't get around to the exorcism part til near the end. There is also a serial murder mystery going on. 5/10.

THE CAT AND THE CANARY -1978 - A dud. Not a good comedy and not a good horror film although it gets some pages in William K Everson's More Classics of the Horror Film. Surprising --maybe he was a Carol Lynley fan. Come to think of it, this is the only work of hers I think I have seen after 1972.

The Sadness(2021) A virus rapidly sweeps a Chinese city, rapidly turning people into sadistic, cannibalistic, sex maniacs. One of the bloodier movies I have seen. In Mandarin with English subs. 7/10.

The Beast of Bray Road (2005) A skeptical sheriff is faced with multiple killings by a werewolf type beast. Movie is hampered by trite, cliche filled dialogue (one guy even says "I'll be right back", you can guess what happens to him). But plenty of killings, mostly of obnoxious drunks and promiscuous women, keep the pace moving. A couple minor surprises toward the end. supposedly based on a true story. 5/10.

Lady Frankenstein (1971) The Dr creates a monster which is a mindless killer. His Daughter creates another monster mainly for purposes of sex. Rosalba Neri (billed as Sarah Bay) is looking good as the title character. Kind of like this one, but might like it better if the first monster looked better. 5½/10

Death Spa (1988) A Spa's malfunctioning equipment is killing and injuring customers and staff, but the clueless victims keep showing up, and management doesn't want to shut down(you see, there's a big promotional party coming up). Two incompetent detectives investigate. 3/10.

NOTHING UNDERNEATH - 1985 - Another rewatch. This is an interesting later giallo concerning murder in the fashion industry of Milan. As Donald Pleasence says while eating spaghetti in a Wendy's, fashion is seasonal, murder is year round.

BLOOD CASTLE 1970
Woman doctor goes to a castle to work for a sinister baron who is suspected of murdering women. This gal does not phase easily. She goes to the castle after hearing about its reputation---she narrowly avoids being raped by a coachman outside-then she is offended that the baron won't hire her. Even after he is willing to give her three months pay to leave. Then he decides to let her stay-and she is offended. But after he shows her his lab--and his experiment to revive a burnt corpse in a vat of black liquid--she agrees to stay on. Then she has all-too-real dreams of being tortured naked by someone with a burned hand. The baron tells her the hallucinations are caused by the vapors of the vat and gives her a 19th century covid mask but she refuses. I was amused by the resilience of the damsel in distress--despite all the weird happenings--she investigates the matter and believes that he has a split personality, the other being responsible for a dozen murders, and she wants to cure him. But it turns out not to be what she thinks. It is weird but I would probably watch it again.

Shivers(1975) A Rewatch. The 2nd virus creates sex maniacs movie I saw this month. Lynn Lowry gets naked, and Barbara Steele makes out with a woman. Also some blood and gore as the virus is caused by a slug like, burrowing parasite. 6½/10.
