I’ll be honest. Usually, I would be in the same boat as you. Hell, I still haven’t seen the 1990s version of Super Mario Bros! On top of that, I am usually very wary of video games being adapted into movies and vice versa. So, my outlook on this was pretty much going business as usual….which is to say that I had zero plans to see it. Then I saw the trailer. It’s certainly not a great trailer, but something in it sold me. Look, this isn’t my first walk in the park, I know better than to fall for a trailer. That said, it still happens to the best of us. Sue me, but the movie looked like a good time and seemed to draw upon a lot of the expansive Mario lore. It’s also doing the smart thing by staying animated.
I guess we’ll see how it turns out. I’m prepared to come back and report that I wasted my money if it’s a dud.

I feel the same way about this as I do Disney movies or Marvel movies... Don't care. And grew out of Disney and Videogames as a child. But if someone enjoys it hey good for them.
The articles about Peach "being an empowered Woman" made me guffaw and roll my eyes. And I just find Chris Pratt annoying.

I have never played the games so I had no pre-existing love of it. My kid has played but did not care for it. Wanted to see it for Jack Black & gave it 2.5 out of 5 for him alone.
I gave it 3.5 I didn't need them spending the first 15 minutes setting the brothers up as total losers even their father trashed.

It was cute. I’m glad it’s doing well but will have to step up it’s game for a sequel.
The fit a lot into those 90 minutes so it often felt kinda bloated.

Not interested --never saw the first movie and I dont recall playing Donkey Kong ever but the story is unusual in that it is about two working class hetero men who go on an adventure and have to succeed in solving a crisis. Modern Disney sure wouldn't make a movie like that. Just having "super" and "brothers" in the title was probably un-PC for them. Plus Mario and Luigi aren't in the mafia right?

I'll stumble across it one day via streaming... otherwise, more power to them.
Nintendo Cinematic Universe all but a given now. Zelda, Smash Bros., Metroid...

No interest at all. Saw the trailer on a screen at Target (I was in line waiting for someone to open a cabinet back in electronics), and have to say that didn't help me get at all interested. (the SNL skit of SUPER MARIO with Pedro Pascal, as a LAST OF US mashup, was fun though)

Not interested even though I played the Mario games as a kid like everyone else.

I saw the live action 90s movie, which I know everybody hates and it was a bad movie but it was a FUN bad movie and they're okay when they can do that. I honestly had no interest in it, but I haven't been to a movie in 2 years so I'm thinking about checking it out simply because all the PC and woke critics are in such an uproar about it and it's raking in a fortune taking an anti-Disney stance to how to make a kids/family movie giving people what they WANT instead of TELLING them they need all boxes checked of representation.

I watched this over the weekend with my wife and our 4 year old son... and it was a blast! I didn't have high expectations for it, we originally went to see it more for my kid. But it ended up being my favorite movie of the year so far. Liked it even better than John Wick 4 and Avatar 2.

I am a big fan of the games and have been since childhood. But this movie is just Minions with bastardized Mario characters. Terrible.

I enjoyed playing the 8 bit game as a kid, doesn't mean I want to watch a feature length film about it.

I saw it yesterday. Not knowing the source material I thought it was good, for me it doesn't have rewatchability, between the two I would still pick the 90s live action movie, but it was pretty cool and very nostalgia-inducing for a lot of the old games we used to play online in the early 2000s.

Filling the running time of a movie with montages in order to hide how thin the plot is? That's a big no-no. And スーパーマリオブラザーズ ピーチ姫救出大作戦! (SUPER MARIO BROS.: THE GREAT MISSION TO RESCUE PRINCESS PEACH!) it's worse than usual. The montages repeat footage of the heroic duo travelling through the Mushroom Kingdom while the same songs are played over and over. As far as animes go, the animation quality of this one is on the level of a TV series from the 1960s as opposed to a theatrically-released movie from the 1980s. Mami Yamase's performance is weak and King Koopa a.k.a. Bowser (the villain) is given a personality and a voice that make him seem like a dweeb. That wouldn't be an issue if there were jokes about that, but the movie still tries to portray him as a real threat. Also, the plot twist near the end and the post-credits scene are idiotic! 3/10 SUPER MARIO BROS. 1993 1/10 THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE 2023 finds the right balance between recreating the source material and adding cinematic elements. When the heroes run and jump, it's shown from different angles. And some things are caused not by what they do but by their personalities. It's fun, even if the "spinning camera" effect gets dizzying at times. Some of the classic sequences from the games are combined with elements from other media, such as anime battles, and that's when things get really exciting! Not every joke lands (especially the ones involving Toad) and there are moments where Anya Taylor-Joy doesn’t sound convincing, but I appreciate the characterization a lot. You see, the new business of the title characters doesn’t meet expectations and they’re mocked by the people around them, but they’re not portrayed as losers. They’re very skillful. When they’re at work, the things they do are presented in a badass way. Considering they’re plumbers, it's quite an achievement! Mario and Bowser have their goofy moments, but they act as a noble hero and a threatening villain whenever the plot requires it. Luigi tells Bowser who Mario is, but not after enduring an interrogation. It’s the kind of torture where anyone would’ve done the same thing, so he doesn’t come off as a weak traitor. And most importantly, as he describes his brother, he mentions how much he admires him. He wasn’t asked to do so. It didn’t even feel like a side effect of guilt and regret. It’s what he was thinking in the moment and wanted to share it. As a matter of fact, all the scenes where Mario & Luigi are together are sweet and sincere without any irony or snark. I can’t remember the last time I saw that kind of bond in a modern mainstream movie. I was rooting for them to get the resolution they deserve. Do they? I’m not entirely sure. The ending with them starting a new life at the Mushroom Kingdom feels happy, but they as well as some extras are the only ones present during that scene. The other characters’ absence is awkward! Yes, we can speculate on how their individual arcs were wrapped up off screen, but what about the subplots they shared with the brothers? It just doesn't feel like a proper conclusion. 6/10
