I wonder how all those overseas soldiers felt when Hope showed up. No wonder he brought a woman with him--but I guess he had personal reasons to have them around as well-not just for the soldiers to ogle. Oogle? Google?

Apparently, and I'm only recently learning this, Hope notoriously cheated on his wife, like a lot. So, they could have served in another capacity.

Hope cheated on his wife all through their marriage. So did George Burns. Jack Benny's wife Mary reported regularly visiting Gracie Allen's home and having Allen showing off a new piece of furniture or an expensive knickknack, and letting her know that it was yet another apology gift from George for yet another fling. She was used it and seemed to enjoy getting the gifts. Mrs. Hope probably had a similar attitude; she may have been relieved that her serial adulterer was out of the house on his USO tours as often as possible, and maybe encouraged him to go. Burns in his later years would often visit Carson's show and discuss having a "goil" (at his age, they were all "girls") in his bed. Ick.

Never knew that Hope, Benny and Burns were such horndogs! Benny's wife was apparently not easy to be around; Jack reportedly apologized to her for his being such a "lousy lay." He probably needed to look for someone friendlier once in a while. (As a staff member during the George H.W. Bush administration once commented, they weren't aware if the President had ever had affairs, but with a wife like Barbara, they hoped he had just so he could experience a little happiness. Maybe the Benny marriage was the same way). Strange that so many of these funny-looking comedians (Hope, Chaplin, Chico Marx, Gleason, Stan Laurel, etc.) were such womanizers, while one of the sexiest stars of all time, Charles Boyer, was also reportedly the most faithful.

My father in law was in Vietnam and greatly appreciated Bob Hope’s appearances. It reminded him of home.
