Dario Argento;9/10Inferno Phenomena Tenebre Suspiria 8/10Four Flies on Grey Velvet The Bird with the Crystal Plumage 7/10Opera 6/10Sleepless Deep Red Cat O’ Nine Tails 5/10The Stendhal Syndrome Giallo 4/10Mother of Tears The Card Player Trauma 3/10Phantom of the Opera
Pick a film or two from what you have seen that would you recommend to someone who was curious in delving into Argento’s work?Deep Red or Suspiria. Maybe not much of a surprise. While Deep Red has never really clicked for me. Despite only ever seeing the longer cut. I would still have it as a good starting point. And Suspiria is just an attack on the senses in what Argento did best. While I tend to lean towards Inferno and Phenomena, Suspiria is where that signature style began.

Out of the 15 films (according to Letterboxd), my list of ranking/rating would be something like this:
10/10 Phenomena (1985)
8/10 Suspiria (1977) Deep Red (1975) The Cat o’ Nine Tails (1971)
7/10 Inferno (1980)
6/10 Tenebre The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970) Opera (1987) Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971) Giallo (2009)
4/10 The Stendhal Syndrome (1996) The Phantom of the Opera (1998) The Card Player (2004) The Mother of Tears (2007)
2/10 Dracula 3D (2012)
Decided to ignore the tv-episodes or tv-movies he made like Jennifer, Pelts or Two Evil Eyes, even though I quite enjoyed Jennifer and wished it had been made into a full length film.
Anyway, I have a feeling certain ones might grow with another visit, as many giallo releases have a nice tendacy to do so over time. Suspiria and Inferno is most likely two that I find visually stunning, and where Phenomena remains my all time favorite. Just something about the whole wild and disturbing scenery along with the nightmarish yet beautiful dreamlike scenes, and love the combination of ambient and synth-disco music, thrown in with heavy metal and hard rock. Might not be the best place to start up the Dario Argento journey, but it sure provides some unforgettable stuff.
His much later films with his daughter Asia, I have never truly managed to get into, not saying it is her fault, but after Opera, there is not one of his films I have bothered to keep hold of in my horror collection.

Suspiria - 8/10 Deep Red - 8/10 Tenebre - 8/10 The Bird with the Crystal Plumage - 8/10 Phenomena - 7.5/10
All I've seen, and yes, Suspiria and Deep Red are pretty much the two main essential viewings for Argento.

My favorites are the 3 Mother's trilogy, 'Opera', and 'Giallo'.'The Card Player', 'Tenebrae', Also his two "Masters of horror" episodes and "Do you like Hitchcock?". ('Demons' which he produced/wrote and 'The Church')
My least favorites are 'Phenomenon', 'Dracula 3d', 'Deep Red'... not really interested in the rest of his catalog. 'The Wax mask' was okay. Not great. I guess I'm more into the more basic movies.
