For better or worse... (Let's skip shorts and just get on with their first Feature Film)
I'd answer first like usual, but I don't want to 'influence' anything. I'm sure someone will remind me of a better example, anyway.

His third feature actually, but Law and Order, a thinly-veiled reworking of the Wyatt Earp story, is one of the best early sound westerns. The overall cynical/weary tone is unusual for any H'wood film of the time much less a western, the sequence with Andy Devine stays with you long after viewing, and the climactic shootout (in a barn, not the OK Corral) is superbly shot. Before the decade was out director Edward Cahn would be directing Our Gang shorts

Robert Altman - The Delinquents (1957), a low-budget teen melodrama, would be 10 years before he made another feature

Clore cited this film for the editing in the barn shootout #telegonus - will comment on your clore tribute later

Interesting theme for a thread, Mort. Credit to those who have responded. I am sure there are some interesting examples floating around. I just hope that when I stumble on one I can find this thread again.
