(This reminds me of the Monty Python sketch, Storage Jars. I don't know why, but I can't seem to get it to play, beyond Eric Idle's opening line: "Good Evening, and welcome to another edition of Storage Jars." Maybe, somebody else can find/post it. Silly, but fun.)
Anyway ...
I save empty containers of Cottage Cheese/Sour Cream containers -- taking care t recognize when enough is enough. They can pile up.
The tall plastic containers, and lids, are available, in bulk, at Smart and Final, which is like a "mini" Costco. It's almost exclusively devoted to foods, and kitchen products. I don't know how wide-spread they are, in the US/Canada, and elsewhere. When I make soups, or large batches of pasta sauces, I share them with a neighbor who has some mobility problems, and doesn't cook much. Those containers are great for that.
I buy the GLAD freezer bags, in quart/gallon, at Costco. One purchase lasts a lonnngg time.
My attempts at making really great "deli" style pickles, has proven dismal. However, I do have some Mason jars. They haven't seen much action recently.

I use glass containers for wet or liquidy things, plastic for dry or solid/near-solid things. Plastic containers can absorb and retain food odors, though, so you have to be prepared to either clean them out *very* thoroughly, or just toss them after a certain point and start over with a fresh one. I've been leaning towards glass more and more for just about everything, though.
I keep my bread in the refrigerator (sometimes in the freezer) double-wrapped in food-grade plastic bags...... these are bags I get from the Bulk Bin areas of various grocery stores (NOT the thinner, flimsier plastic bags they have in the Produce sections).
I use these Office Depot alligator clips to clamp off bags of chips and whatnot:

I use Rubbermaid Brilliance for everything. Clean them in the dishwasher.
