Worse than ever. It's like a plot to irritate people into signing up for Youtube premium.
I made a thread once about how an ad interrupted a song I was listening to. That blew my mind. I wonder what the safeguards are, i.e. ads less than 15 seconds can be skipped, or adds less than 6 seconds can be accompanied by another ad.
Ordinarily I just skip them. That's getting harder and harder. It almost seems like punishment for trying to skip them is more ads. Usually I would skip them, but when I patch my computer through my TV so I can watch it on my TV, I have to stop what I'm doing to skip the ad.
It's really getting on my nerves. Just fucking annoying, and yet, I still have the impression that it could be a lot worse, and this ad bombardment is only a sneak preview of what's to come.

Yes, they are extremely annoying and are pretty much just bully tactics to get you to subscribe to premium like you said. It's very scummy.
I've been using ad blockers on my PC for years, but never bothered to find a way to remove them from mobile devices. Earlier this year, after finally being fed up with all the ads, I did some research and found a way to once and for all be 100% ad free on every device.
On PC: Use an ad blocker extension, which I assume you already have installed. If not, uBlock Origin is the one I use and it works very well. As a bonus if you're interested, the "SponsorBlock" extension for your browser is also great for automatically skipping sponsors/ads which are part of the actual video. It can also skip other annoying things such as the YouTuber telling you to "like and subscribe". ublockorigin.com/sponsor.ajay.app/On Android TV: Use "SmartTubeNext". This is a free alternative to the official YouTube app, which comes with a built in ad blocker, and also SponsorBlock which I mentioned above. It also comes with many other useful features not available on the official app. You can also log in with your YouTube account and have access to all your playlists and subscriptions etc. I discovered this about a month ago and it's amazing. It has totally changed the way I use YouTube. Sadly it is not compatible with mobile devices though.
To install it: On a computer, download the .apk file from the above link, and put it on a USB drive. Plug the USB drive into your Android TV device and then install it by using any file manager which you can download from the Google play store on the TV.
On mobile devices: Use "NewPipe". This is another free alternative to the official app, but designed for phones and tablets. It's not quite as impressive as SmartTubeNext, but it does have built in ad blocker and Sponsorblock. Sadly you can not log into it though, but you do have the option to save videos to playlists/favorites without needing an account. You can also download videos using it.
To install it: On your phone or tablet, download the .apk file from the above link and install it using the inbuilt file manager that your device should already have. Nice and easy.

On my phone, I like to exit the video when an ad starts and keep re-clicking on it in the hopes of not getting an ad at the beginning and starting the video right away. I may be better off just watching the ads though since I would be spending more time trying that than when an ad is started and done.

I now use NewPipe on my phone instead of the YouTube app. Works great. Provided instructions above for you to find it.

I use NewPipe but mainly to download. I like to support certain channels on YouTube so I often turn the sound off and let the ads do their worst.

I do find it annoying that the skip button rarely comes up anymore.
