A family film mixed in with techno thriller that plays on Cold War fears. Works surprisingly well even if you have to suspend disbelief at how easy it is for a kid like Broderick to hack into an advanced supercomputer. Matthew Broderick's character is a clear precursor to his Ferris Bueller character in 1986 (they are eerily similar). Dabney Coleman and Barry Corbin were terrific in their supporting roles. Ally Sheedy is also the perfect girl next door and surprisingly spunky, And that War Room still is a sight to behold. Don't care for the cheesy electronic score though.

We ran this in the cinema I was managing that summer, I don't know how many times I watched it over its course. Highly entertaining, fun little adventure with fine performances from all involved. And you're right, that War Room is still a spectacle even by today's standards.

One of my favorites growing up. Just an all out well done film. Sheedy’s character is who I would have dreamed of having as my neighbor back then. The war room was amazing. My brother and I used to try to see how many of those scenarios WOPR we could name while it’s “learning”.
I actually liked the score, I had it on LP.

Great movie!! It's in my iTunes Library.
I lived in Colorado Springs for a long time so a lot of this was like home to me (although I never went into NORAD).
In theaters there, whenever some movie would mention "Colorado Springs", everyone would cheer loudly.

first movie with a kid with a computer in his room. Internet, a modem, a printer.

Back before broderick got away with killing two people by driving on the wrong side of the road. Those were more innocent times.
