Filling the running time of a movie with montages in order to hide how thin the plot is? That's a big no-no. And スーパーマリオブラザーズ ピーチ姫救出大作戦! (SUPER MARIO BROS.: THE GREAT MISSION TO RESCUE PRINCESS PEACH!) it's worse than usual. The montages repeat footage of the heroic duo travelling through the Mushroom Kingdom while the same songs are played over and over. As far as animes go, the animation quality of this one is on the level of a TV series from the 1960s as opposed to a theatrically-released movie from the 1980s. Mami Yamase's performance is weak and King Koopa a.k.a. Bowser (the villain) is given a personality and a voice that make him seem like a dweeb. That wouldn't be an issue if there were jokes about that, but the movie still tries to portray him as a real threat. Also, the plot twist near the end and the post-credits scene are idiotic!

THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE 2023 finds the right balance between recreating the source material and adding cinematic elements. When the heroes run and jump, it's shown from different angles. And some things are caused not by what they do but by their personalities. It's fun, even if the "spinning camera" effect gets dizzying at times. Some of the classic sequences from the games are combined with elements from other media, such as anime battles, and that's when things get really exciting! Not every joke lands (especially the ones involving Toad) and there are moments where Anya Taylor-Joy doesn’t sound convincing, but I appreciate the characterization a lot. You see, the new business of the title characters doesn’t meet expectations and they’re mocked by the people around them, but they’re not portrayed as losers. They’re very skillful. When they’re at work, the things they do are presented in a badass way. Considering they’re plumbers, it's quite an achievement! Mario and Bowser have their goofy moments, but they act as a noble hero and a threatening villain whenever the plot requires it.

Luigi tells Bowser who Mario is, but not after enduring an interrogation. It’s the kind of torture where anyone would’ve done the same thing, so he doesn’t come off as a weak traitor. And most importantly, as he describes his brother, he mentions how much he admires him. He wasn’t asked to do so. It didn’t even feel like a side effect of guilt and regret. It’s what he was thinking in the moment and wanted to share it. As a matter of fact, all the scenes where Mario & Luigi are together are sweet and sincere without any irony or snark. I can’t remember the last time I saw that kind of bond in a modern mainstream movie. I was rooting for them to get the resolution they deserve. Do they? I’m not entirely sure. The ending with them starting a new life at the Mushroom Kingdom feels happy, but they as well as some extras are the only ones present during that scene. The other characters’ absence is awkward! Yes, we can speculate on how their individual arcs were wrapped up off screen, but what about the subplots they shared with the brothers? It just doesn't feel like a proper conclusion.
