Not often actors get nominated for playing the same role (bonus that Becket and The Lion in Winter are standalone movies not really connected to each other).
A little THEATRICAL!!!, though. Especially next to the subtle, nuanced performance Anthony Hopkins gives as gay icon Richard the Lionheart.

O'Toole was never really know for being subtle, was he? I'm a big fan of his and think he's terrific in both of those though.

I've seen these, Laurence of Arabia, The Stunt Man, Caligula, Troy, Ratatouille, Last Emperor, and, er...Phantoms. He was pretty OTT in The Stunt Man, which suited the character and tone of that movie, but I don't remember him being LIKE THIS!!! in those others. These are based on old plays so he's very much maintaining that kinda energy. Only problem is that they're movie adaptations and you don't need to play to the back row.

I think it works for the character and like you said they're based on plays. I've never had a problem with movies that feel "stagey". My Favorite Year and The Ruling Class both have awesome O'Toole performances. From what I remember (and I could be wrong) he's not too over the top in Venus and that's a wonderful late career performance from him.

Anytime the religious kid started monologuing, I felt like I was stuck in bad theater patiently waiting to a pity-clap for some poor actor. I'll have to check those out. The plots of the first two sound fun.

Not crazy-bad as the reviews would suggest, just a forgettable period drama with some porn here and there.

Thereβs good and bad in any form of acting. Peter O Toole as Henry II is in the good range.

Thereβs good and bad in any form of acting. Peter O Toole as Henry II is in the good range. As a fan of Al Pacino and Gary Oldman, I like a good shouty performance as much as the next guy. But even if someone was smuggling Henry II some Dark Age Columbian nose candy, he'd still be a little over the top in these. And there are guys around him like Hopkins and Richard Burton giving fairly real performances. Even Katherine Hepburn, straight from the 30s and 40s era of golden age Hollywood, is doing more nuanced stuff.
