Majority of the bad reviews aren't about it being gritty, it's about it being boring. Another red herring from Formersamhmd. maybe during a 6 hour movie broken in the episodes is a bad idea And Netflix' way of making 13 episode seasons when there's only enough plot to last 9 is better?

The fact that they did this at all is every indication that they will keep doing it. It had nothing to do with the themes of the series and anyone who parrots that excuse is either naive or a shill. That's a baseless accusation based on nothing but rhetoric created by the Hater Bandwagon and has no basis in fact. it is confirmed to be AI. Nothing baseless about it. They are literally doing what you claim won’t happen. You really are something, Sam. Raptor was right to ban you

Not going to lie, didn't care that much for the first episode. Hopefully the next one will hook me in. Otherwise this will be another wasted potential.

Try to not hate every last little thing Disney does, you'll be better for it.
I had to put up with this in Star Wars, then Star Trek, then Tolkien. I'm sick of the Hater Bandwagon.

I thought it was a decent pilot episode, but it's going to confuse casuals or people who don't pay attention. As soon as the skrull pretending to be Ross was killed, I knew they needed to establish immediately that it wasn't actually Ross, which they did shortly thereafter-- Hill says, "the Ross imposter" when explaining the situation to Fury. Yet I read an article this morning where the author clearly thinks Ross has been a skrull the whole time, which makes no sense. So I'm afraid a lot of the reactions and opinions on this show are going to be misinformed, and they aren't going to do its reputation any favors. That isn't the show's fault, but nevertheless, it'll be an issue to contend with.
They're just getting the ball rolling, and while I can't say it was incredibly compelling, it didn't do anything to make me say, "They better do {X}, or I'm out." Which honestly is an improvement over a lot of their shows. First and foremost, it's great to see Fury in action again. As a viewer, I think it'll be fun not being able to trust your eyes throughout this entire series. If they do it right, it'll keep you guessing the entire time, which is how an espionage thriller should work.
What I didn't like was the death of Agent Hill. Not the fact that she was killed, I can respect killing off a major character to add stakes; but throwing it in at the end of episode 1, at the hands of a villain we don't understand or respect yet, just made it seem like lazy shock value and an insult to the character's legacy. She wasn't even killed while doing anything heroic, like saving kids from the blast or something. Just fooled by a skrull and shot while standing there doing nothing. For all time, when you go back and watch her appearances from the Avengers through Winter Soldier and beyond, you're going to think about her unceremonious demise. Maybe it'll take on greater meaning as the series progresses, who knows. As long as they don't play the 'she was a skrull!' game with us, but I think they lingered on her body for a while to show it was really her.
Like I said, I wasn't blown away, but I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here. Who can you trust? Will we get any surprise cameos (either in their real form or as skrull impostors)? Will a long time character be revealed as a skrull, forcing us to wonder how long it's been the case? (Though again, I'm not looking forward to morons misinterpreting things, and all the theories based on simple misunderstandings.)

It wasn’t bad. But there are bad signs. Emilia Clarke might be the murderous terrorist we’re supposed to feel sorry for, like the ginger in F&TWS. Or she’ll be inexplicably redeemed. Also the bad Skrulls are probably just refugees looking for a home, as that is the pinnacle of storytelling apparently.
I wouldn’t get political if the current MCU wasn’t so heavy on political rhetoric.

I wouldn’t get political if the current MCU wasn’t so heavy on political rhetoric. At the moment, we aren't sure what to believe. Was she in on the switch on the attack she warned them about? Time will tell. Even if she was, I'm not sure how her potential redemption would be inexplicable. Darth Vader killed women and children, and was complicit in the destruction of an entire planet, yet he was redeemed. I agree with you, I don't want a repeat of the political refugee plotline from F&TWS. They can make the villains compelling without trying to make them sympathetic. The 'good' skrulls even have a complicated relationship with Earth and Fury. I'm not sure why it was Fury's job to find them a new home, especially when their technology is leagues beyond ours. But if he and Carol Danvers made them a promise and then basically abandoned that mission, I can see why they'd be upset. Fury's next appearance will be in The Marvels, which has a much more lighthearted tone. So how radically different will the world be after this series? The trailer for that starts with Fury on the SABRE space station, so is that his new HQ? Are skrulls openly (to the public) working with him there? Is the skrull threat ongoing at the show's resolution?

Ehhh... so it isn't great, so far. It still has potential, but there's so much that doesn't make sense. The dude had an army of Skrulls working for him, and Hydra still was able to grow withing SHIELD and completely sneak up on him? Maybe it'll be explained as the show progresses? And if they don't somehow tie this in with F&TWS and the next Cap movie, I think it's insane that they are reusing the refugees plotline again.
Another thing that's really throwing me off: While I respect character development, and showing us a different side of Fury after all these years, I just don't like it. Fury's superpower has always been that he's 10 steps ahead of everyone, that he's unknowable, that you just don't know where you stand with him. Ironically, in a story of deception and intrigue, I'm somehow uncomfortable knowing this much about Fury. In an odd way, I feel his character is actually less compelling when he's constantly back on his heels, revealing his true feelings and having a personal life.
We're already a third of the way through the series, and I'm having a hard time getting pulled into the story. Hopefully, things will really start to pick up soon.

I don't see how this series is going to wrap up the Secret Invasion in any satisfying way.
I feel like this story should have at least been set up with Captain Marvel 2 or something before being dumped on Diseny+

Hydra had been growing within SHIELD right from the start back after WWII, so by the Skrulls got on board the corruption was already deep in there. Plus, we don't know how many Skrulls stayed on Earth after Captain Marvel because the millions of them now came during the 5 year Gap.

I will be honest; this series just isn't doing it for me so far. It's been pretty dull outside of a couple of things and I think downsizing the source material to the scale that it is just loses the intrigue and excitement of it all - A politician that we have never met before has been a Skrull the whole time? Meh. An Avenger or known associate of The Avengers or SHIELD that we have seen many times over the years being revealed to be a Skrull for X number of years? Now that would be something. The retcons are also pretty annoying too, suddenly plot threads from previous phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in particular the first, feel meaningless and like they belong in a different universe almost.

It has nothing to do with 'knowing what to look for.' Hydra was actively recruiting SHIELD agents and had an entire global network entrenched in the intelligence community. It was already a stretch to think Fury wouldn't have noticed; now that we know he had skrulls planted everywhere, it's even more ridiculous that the two spy networks within spy networks never crossed paths. And Fury found out about the Hydra infiltration during TWS, not 'recently before' it. Go back and watch it again so you'll know what you're talking about. Fury is 100% on board with Project Insight, he even tells Cap he better get on board with the program. He only has doubts when he realizes he's been frozen out of the controls.

Yes and during Captain Marvel, Fury wasn't the Head of SHIELD yet. Meaning HYDRA would have known about any Skrulls he had working with him and known to avoid them. They were a step ahead of Fury, that was the whole point.
And if you watched the show, you'd know he hardly had an army of Skrull Agents. We don't even know if there actually were any working with him, because the current millions of Skrulls on Earth only came during the 5 year gap.

It's almost certain Hydra knew Skrulls existed, but how could they know all of the Skrulls working with Fury? How could they avoid them? How would they know who's a Skrull? It makes the already implausible enormity of the Hydra terror cell within SHIELD even more hard to swallow. And you're wrong, we know they were working with Fury from 1997 until at least the blip. We saw Talos and Soren working with him on screen even after that, and we know for a fact other Skrulls were working for him; that's why they're so bitter. It's literally the purpose Gravik and many others turned on Fury-- because they did his dirty work, and he didn't live up to his end of the bargain. We don't know how many Skrulls Fury had, but it was more than a handful, going by that scene alone. And it isn't unreasonable to assume more joined the cause afterward, considering how many of them now feel betrayed by him. If you actually use your brain while watching the show, these issues become evident rather quickly. You keep bringing up extraneous information. I'm not talking about the Skrulls who came later. I'm talking about the stuff we saw on screen.

Here's a thing, wait till the story is done and then draw conclusions instead of jumping the gun like so many keep doing.
