On this date eighty years ago (July 10, 1943), during the Allied invasion of Sicily, this member of General Patton's Seventh Army singlehandedly took out an Italian machine-gun nest which had kept his platoon pinned down. Charging through machine-gun fire, he entered the nest, a small hut, and attacked one of the enemy soldiers, dragging him out by his throat. The other Italian soldiers quickly emerged from the hut and surrendered. He also reportedly entered the hut, grabbed hold of the machine-gun barrel, and tore it from its mount. Not only did this save the lives of his Allied comrades, but they were able to advance and take control of the area. Later that day, after being treated for minor wounds during the attack, he also tipped off his comrades to a group of Italian soldiers lurking near the area, who were quickly captured before they could ambush the platoon.
He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions. But the award was later revoked. Why?

That was Chips, who was originally thought to be an all American collie and richly deserving of the Silver Star and Purple Heart. But when he was found to be part German Shepherd Patton grew sour and revoked the awards.

It wasn't Patton, but some military noodge who protested the idea of giving military medals to non-human combatants. Chips was a loyal American canine who had no secret pro-German leanings, as evidenced by his snapping at General Eisenhower when the general tried to pet him.🐕🦺
