I'm referring to the 'Toolbox murders" There is a 78 version and the 2004 version. How come the remake is bad? and in what ways is the original better? Is it worth a dvd purchase?

I have only seen the original, and I gotta be honest, it was a waste of money and time. But that is just my opinion. Did not know a remake was done, but then again for the last 10-15 years, there is probably not much horror films made during the 70s and 80s, that has not been remade.

the original is on you tube. I saw 25 mins of it. I might skip this one. I'm surprised nobody has touched 'The exorcist' yet. That would be something. Can you imagine what a remake would be like?

Other than the same title, the killer wearing a ski mask and using tools to murder his victims. They share very little with each other, especially plot wise.
I remember being slightly disappointed in the original. Nasty and grimy opening half-hour of pure horror exploitation. Shocking and mean-spirited, but once the story changes direction involving a kidnapped girl it becomes less convincing in its plot reveals, and the uneasiness of the opening half doesn’t have the same effect anymore.
As for Tobe Hooper’s film... I enjoyed it. More of a straight-forward mystery-slasher hitting over-the-top Grand Guignol territory by ratcheting up the intensity and cruelty of its visuals. Storytelling can get contrived and a little muddled, but perfect use of a rundown, yet historic apartment building of oddities, and Angela Bettis as the lead made for an entertaining watch.
