“You’re right. I did lose a million dollars last year. I expect to lose a million dollars this year. I expect to lose a million dollars next year. You know, Mr Thatcher, at this rate of losing a million a year, I’ll have to close this business…in sixty years.”

First viewings: The Young in Heart (1938):A family of fortune hunters meets a wealthy old lady who is lonely and appreciates their company. This forgotten gem is an excellent, heartfelt comedy, beautifully acted by its wonderful cast. Actor Richard Carlson’s film debut and Paulette Goddard’s first talking picture. Excellent direction by Richard Wallace with a very smart, funny and sensitive script by Paul Osborn. Highly recommended. Film: The Living Record of Our Memory (2021):A documentary that explores film through the voices of significant professionals who have contributed to make sure moving images survive and remain accessible. A brilliant film that’s fascinating to watch. Highly recommended for all. Remember the Day (1941):Heartwarming saga of the romance and career of a teacher over the years, with a wonderful performance by Claudette Colbert and strong support by John Payne. Excellent direction by Henry King. Strongly recommended. Re-watches: Bright Road (1953):A dedicated schoolteacher (Dorothy Dandridge) and an understanding principal (Harry Belafonte) in an all-black school in the south help a rebellious student (Philip Hepburn) overcome his circumstances and his pride in order to fulfill his potential. It’s rare for a film from that era to have an entirely black cast (save Robert Horton in one scene) and be a major studio production. A special, very moving film with strong performances by all the cast, including the kids. It deserves to be seen. Highly recommended. Christmas in July (1940):Writer-director Preston Sturges’ second feature after The Great McGinty is a slapstick satire on capitalism and the American success story. Not as great as his later films, but it’s nevertheless smartly done and is a lot of fun to watch. Strongly recommended, and a must see for Sturges fans. Yours, Willa Cather (2015):A 30-minute documentary inspired by the recently published "Selected Letters of Willa Cather," edited by Andy Jewell and Janis Stout. Marg Helgenberger portrays Cather in voice over narration. Cather wrote some of the most unforgettable fiction of the 20th century. Highly recommended. Lured (1947):Lucille Ball stars in this Douglas Sirk film-noir about an American who works undercover for Scotland Yard, serving as the bait to catch a serial killer. She gives an excellent dramatic performance with good support from her outstanding co-stars. Recommended for fans of the cast and the director.

Claudius, I love that Orson Welles quote from Citizen Kane. Quite a memorable moment.

Desk Set, 1957, is a Tracy/Hepburn rom-com, that I like to visit, from time to time. Private DVD.
This was a timely re-viewing, as it came just after SAG-AFTRA, joined The Writers' Guild, on the picket line, with concerns of job security ... from "streaming" practices, to "AI."
Bunny Watson (Katharine Hepburn), head of the Research Department of the Federal Broadcasting Company: "Peg. NO COMPUTER can do our job."
